I agree in most part with the above :-) A good number of the newer Evison introductions are described as "free flowering", especially the so-called 'patio' clematis. They tend to bloom early, while the plant is still quite young, and have no defined bloom season, but rather produce flowers over an extended period. 'Harlow Carr' is one clematis that I'd certainly describe as free flowering -- I've never grown any other clematis that produced the number of blooms this one does and over such a long period. It is in pretty much constant bloom over the entire growing season.

Typically, dormants do better in climates with colder winters, and evergreens do better in climates with warmer winters. But it's not always a perfect indicator. If you are looking for things that will do well for you, your best indicator is to buy plants grown and sold by people in your same climate zone, regardless of foliage habit. Nate

1. If I remember correctly, some of the plants listed require moist soil. And I think, there was a bit of a dry spell in your area. 2. It's not unusual to lose a few transplants. I planted three red huckleberry. Two survived. I did not water in late fall, and I probably should have. I also lost a mock orange, but it was one that I planted in the fall. The spring plantings took well. 3. The spindly dicentra may be due to soil deficiency or something else lacking in the location. You may want to see if where you have planted it is consistent with its natural setting - part-shade, moist soil, etc. 4. I'm guessing, but if your plants were too close to a tree, they may not have been planted in a suitable location. I have planted many native plants, and the ones that are shrubs will take longer to grow to sufficient size to bloom and fruit. Good luck, and compliments on all your hard work.
