Four Season Vegetable Gardening

anyone starting plants in gh or ground yet

I'm in lower MI and the weather has been great. Although I'm not dumb enough to believe that winter is over, I was wondering if anyone with same conditions has started in greenhouse or ground and what you have planted.I'm getting ready tp start in my small gh now, but would like to start carrots, radishes,peas and other cool season crops

My winter spinach probably has two more cuttings. I'll be pulling winter lettuce out to replace it with the summer crop beets/beet greens next week. They'll grow as a living, harvestable mulch under the tomatoes, eggplant and cucumbers. Eggplant, cucumbers and tomatoes will go into the ground in the greenhouses as soon as the over night temps hit 30*.

I don't have a gh but do have a hoop house on my raised bed. I have lots of things going in there that I planted in early March. Even with the wild winter weather we have been experiencing (I live in SE MI also) everything looks happy and healthy. I will list what I have off the top of my head but I am sure I will miss some...various leaf lettuce, spinach, kale, swiss chard, radishes, beets, carrots, potatoes, garlic, shallots, mache...well probably lots more since it is pretty packed. It measures 4'x10' in size. Oh yeah the peas are starting to pop up today. Kim

I suppose the big question is whether or not the June 4th move will be to a place where they can go into the ground. What you really want to aim for is to reduce the number of times that you transplant but at the same time get them out of the pots they are in now. The current pots are far to small and will negatively impact future transplants if you leave them much longer. If you are unsure then go for the 6' pots. You can always leave them in there even after you move to a more permanent location until the plants are ready for another transplant. Try to keep them well watered in the meantime to discourage additional root development. Here is a link that might be useful: Irrigation Equipment

I have 3 different start dates I'm in N VA. Will be planting mostly in Self Watering Containers. Also have seeds winter sow for in ground planting once they sprout and are transplanted into the ground. Looking for Early Spring this year and prepared for the worse with a finally sowing mid March for my most favored tomatoes. Goose Creek, Wes, KBX, Indian Stripe, Ghost of Laos, Cherokee Green, NAR, Brandyboy, Brandywine Sudduth, Matina,Purple Passion, Aunt Ginneys Purple, Sungold, Black Cherry and TYW. Next week I'll be potting up the 1st group that were started 1/22 to 20 oz cups and placing them inside the Rubbermaid containers to finish hardening off. 2nd group started 2/08 will be potted up March 8th and 3rd group started 2/19 will be potted up 3/22. What kind of light, TJ? I ask because as I read through this thread it occurs to me everyone starts plants weeks earlier than I do. I use HID lighting and the plants are in front of a south facing patio door. That may be more light than most are giving their plants, but I want to make sure I am not missing something here. I will start zinnias end of April, 4 weeks before a May 20th plant out date. When do y'all plant out warm weather stuff that won't take a frost? Petunias I won't start until 6-8 weeks before May 20th. Maybe everyone else sets stuff out earlier?

Tomatoes (five kinds), Eggplant, Peppers (sweet & hot) Brussel Sprouts, Broccoli, Parsley, Lettuce (mixed leaf & baby romaine), Spinach, Echinacia, Bachelor Buttons, Lychnis, Zinnia, Asters, Alyssum, Lobelia, Cilantro, Basil (Genovese, Licorice, Amethyst), Russian Tarragon, and Mint, all under lights. Plus a buch of winter sowed seeds that I am not remembering right now and sure cant read the labels under all the snow! About 2/3 of the indoor seeds have sprouted in the last week and are looking good. the rest I am still looking for. I'm waiting til mid April to start most of the rest. Hoping I can turn my raised beds into cold frames and put out the cold weather veg then, so I will have more room under the lights.

My beds are also covered with hoops. My peas are starting to poke their head through too. I have planted carrots, beets, onions,turnips,etc. outside. I have a ton of mixed greens, lettuces, chard,spinach in the gh ready to go outside. Also some herbs and pepper plants started. This week will be the big seed starting week for me. Let's just hope the weather stays decent, I've had to keep 2 small heaters on in the gh.Good luck.
