The Christmas Conundrum

If you've just finished decorating the tree and are now enjoying it (and your egg nog), have you considered the irony of being a conifer lover and killing one for Christmas?

Here's one man's attempt at a solution.

You should enjoy your tree without any qualms. These trees are grown for a single purpose and are both renewable and sustainable.

I would make this counterpoint for those that do feel a sense of guilt. I have a friend that has had a Christmas Tree plantation for over 40 years. Up until several years ago he had never found a WB. Now he and his employees have found 6 and are on constant lookout for any signs of new ones developing. The chances of finding a WB among 10,000 concentrated trees is far greater per acre than in a natural setting.

That's a lovely tradition they've kept. Hopefully the children will in turn will carry it on.

I like (modest) lights on specimen streetside trees or plants, some spiralled strings can look amazing in the dark.

I don't have a room in my house large enough to accomodate these large entertainment centers, but if I did, I would grab them up in a heartbeat, even if I had to redo/add-to the shelving. If I had huge rooms here is what I would do: *Mudroom storage for gloves, coats, shoes, boots, sports equipment, cleaning supplies, etc. *Freestanding pantry *Clothing storage in bedroom *Linen storage/closet *Playroom storage if I had kids at home *Pretty garage storage *Potting shed for garage *Pretty basement storage *Craftroom/sewing organization Again these idea only work with the proper space (which I don't have) but many folks have more room than they know what to do with and are looking for the elusive organization ideas. Some of these are pretty in their original finish, but since most are practically being given away, what a great opportunity to get creative with different paint and faux finish ideas. Sigh! Sure would love to have the space.

Island style conundrum

I really appreciate all the feedback. Yes, it's true that my natural preference is a single slab island. But the issue isn't my architect-- he has an opinion (and usually incredible taste and guidance) but he won't try to force me to do something I don't want. I really posted the ad because even though I think I could come up with the rational pros/cons list, I don't really know-- I have never had a two-tier. So does anyone have one and feel kind of closed in, cut off from the rest of the party? Is the bar height really a drag with kids? (MIne are 4 and 6 so not tiny). We have a lot of other table top space so I don't really need it for wrapping gifts or projects (though I'm kind of psyched about imagining drying pounds of fresh pasta on the counter...) Would it be really awesome to have the wood area for serving and lower stress given the marble counters? The island with part stone/part wood on the same level isn't really my style, though I could imagine a large walnut cutting board, as remodelfla suggested). THANKS

Shall we finish the current 2018 lotto and let it stand as is? i sign up to help Jen, but she did most of the work with block and color selection. It's only fair for us to continue through 2018. I do understand Bkay dilemma, but I'm happy you mentioned this conundrum...good discussion from all. Theresa, I think you hit the nail on the head "shelf life". I'd like to propose the following moving forward: Start off 2019 with a BOM, with one twist... all interested let me know, I'll randomly assign you a month and on the first of your assigned month, you post your block with the link to the directions. Anyone can participate whenever they wish, use whatever colors, fabric they wish, just share on the site for all of to ogle and ahhh. If we don't have 12 volunteers, one for each month, that's ok, we will support the months we have volunteers for and take it from there. i too participated in the last year of the birthday block, and that was fun. If anyone else would like to organize it and kick start it, I'll support. Intended use? No idea. Ha! We don’t have a ton of closet space -and no attic space, so wanted to build in as much storage as was feasible. And just wasn’t sure what I’d do with that space otherwise. This may house games, or spare linens, or Christmas decorations, or -no idea. But I’m sure it’ll get filled up with something.

I love it when people decorate the trees in their gardens. I don't have electricity stubbed out to where most of my conifers are, but I sometimes decorate my large Abies pinsapo 'Glauca' with plastic ornaments in silver and red. Very festive!

Love the idea of the tree lot folks looking for brooms.

Golden forms can be recognized in very early stage. There is a nursery here that grows conifer seedlings for forestry. Owner told me that he finds a white seedling among his stock in every two years or so. His production is about 3 million seedlings a year, 80% of wich is picea abies and rest pinus sylvestris. That would make chances of golden mutation 1 of 6000 000.

I asked him what he has done with these white ones and he told me they just went to trash for many years for they didnÃÂ´t fill the quality reguirements .

Since his enlightement in this issue 2 years ago he started to take them aside in bigger pots but once forgot to water them so back to point zero again.

He has also started to grow christmas trees resently so maby he will also find brooms in future.

Many out there will recognize the name Hupp,growers of Christmas trees and wreath/trimming materials for three generations in NW Oregon.The numbers of seedling mutations plus bud mutations have produced a good selection of interesting forms and colors for collectors.
These run mainly to Abies procera but include Pinus peuce
and P.leucodermis.I believe Thuja plicata 'Whipcord'was a Hupp find also.I doubt that young Jason Hupp spends much time outside the family farm looking for brooms!D.
