OK I posted a question about my fig trees in another thread, but this one raises more questions (dang I need to learn about figs!) One of my trees is bare (no leaves etc). The other is bare of leaves but has had little figs on it all winter. Lots and lots of them....will that reduce this year's crop? Arghhhh this danged garden is going to get the best of me LOL Do fig trees look different depending on the type??? If I posted a pic of my two would it be easy to tell the difference or is it impossible given they're bare.... It's pretty mild here (pacific northwest) but we did have some pretty cold temps this winter (for here...my other house is alaska so in comparison it's warm always here LOL) Would those have damaged the crop?????

Jonathan, An interesting observation. Not sure what 'tip' means. Probably you did not mean those dormant 'scale shields' that first drop off at dormancy break, cannot remember the right technical term. Just went out to inspect all my figs trees. Noticed some that fit your description. At this early stage of spring, I noticed some figs with 'still tightly' held buds that looked reddish. On very close examination, I noticed that it is ACTUALLY the underside of the (very young) curled leaves that FIRST shows up, together with their underside veins! This is what gives the 'tip' the red hue. No contradiction here. Then the leaf flips over and the vein red color fades, as it matures. This is what I observed: My 2 HCs (sources: EL and Hartmann) showed it. Sal's (EL) showed it. VdB (EL) showed it. My #4 unknown (Ta Cenc) showed it (wonder what this fig really is!). My #2 (MOST obvious, also observed by Herman last year) and #5 unknowns (supposedly of the Mission fig type) showed it. All other figs none... Specifically looked at the Black Mission and Vista Mission young figs (both) from Jon, and neither showed it! They may in a more advanced leafing out stage. However I did observe the the Vista breba start as a bead-sized, shoe-polish-black color, and then fade away as the figlets grows... George (NJ).

After watering everyday, keeping the shade over my poor Black Jack fig tree, it is showing signs of new life! My Angel Red pomegranate that was planted the same day did the exact same thing. They basically shed 90% of their leaves to help deal with transplant shock. After some TLC for two weeks, they both put out healthy new growth! Here're some photos of the fig tree with new growth. But there are lots of these tiny flies around the tree. Could they be fig whitefly? Here's some photos of my Angel Red that did the exact same thing. Again, I am so glad that I got lots of advise on here for care of my fig tree. But I also have learned from this experience that the plants are pretty smart and does what it needs to cope with the transplant shock if you give them some additional support like water and some shade. I have learned to not freak out as soon as I see the tree drop their leaves when I first plant them, and learn that with proper care they will put out new growth when it is ready.

Figman, If your trees are in the ground,is your soil fertile? If not, use the 24-8-16 Miracle-gro once a week.If you want to go organic,mix in matter of your choice. Also never use leaves for winterizing,as they could invite mold and mildew. My entire collection came from Belleclare nursery. They grew and raised thousands of fig trees. They were one of the best fig experts in this country. There ways are the most proven. You can never go wrong with their methods.There methods along the years have now become mine. They had been on the Martha Stewart show,and many newspaper and magazine articles. Every fig tree in my orchard are just about on auto pilot. Oh, don't forget about the lime, figs love it. Twice spring/summer(always remove the old stuff).Good luck, Todd, Long Island, NY
