I don't borrow photos, Nell. I do make lists for myself about some garden things, such as plant names so that I'll remember them, plants I've ordered and the source (copy the order form to a folder).

You seem to live in rather a paradise of sorts, where most anything you want to grow will grow. I am constantly struggling with what I would like to have versus the climate, my dogs, and the rabbits. I win some battles and I lose some.

You should never 'borrow' a photo unless you have permission. Photos have a copy right by who ever took the photo...even if a visible copyright is not on the photo. Of course everyone knows when you put a photo on the web, you can't stop it from being copied.....well you can, but most don't bother.

I'm like Lorna, I stuggle and don't live in the gardening heaven zone. I had someone go through my garden on the weekend and it just didn't cross my mind that a holding bed would sound unusual. lol A holding bed with spare plants...I have 2 holding beds. Lorna you might want to try this...then if something happens, you pull out the old plant and have something to replace it with. I don't take other peoples photos....but I do take notes...like from gotta garden's pics and libbys and Annette's or their posts. I don't copy, I write my own notes. I have a seperate file for them. Basically all I need to do is jog my memory to colours or heights or combo's. I don't want my garden to look exactly like theirs.....I think our gardens need to show our own personalities.

I had a picture of Steven's garden on my desktop for the longest time, it always brought a smile to my face when I turned the computer on, I did ask permission first. I do bookmark some but I guess eventually they will disappear.
There was a thread where Keesha? had a pic with a rusty tin man? (can't remember) in amongst some flowers I was quite taken with, wish I'd bookmarked that one. Every once in awhile I like to return to these threads for inspiration. Visual is more helpful for me as at times I can't make heads or tails of my version of shorthand LOL.
Sierra, right now my Michaelmas Dasiy bed is all higalty pigalty. All my new finds are being heeled in there for the coming winter, my two little holding beds are full at present.
If I had the room for more holding beds I'd put them in, all my new purchases would spend their first year there, after seeing how they grow I'd have a better chance of planting them in the right spot. So many of the plants are treated with a growth retardant so you don't get to see the real thing until the next year. Yeah I'm one who needs the visual.

In no way do I advocate using the pictures or the text of another without permission, if those properties are to be reproduced or published for others to see.

Even 'Fair Use' laws have to do with passing along pictures or text to others. I did not intend to imply that I was going to make web sites, put in a blog or in any other way publish the work of others -- just look at them in the same way I look at pictures torn from a magazine, or a recipe saved.

The two photos that I have used in a file for my eyes only were a pic of a camellia bush pruned as a tree, while I decide whether to prune the lower limbs of my camellia, and a border of early spring flowers around a circle of lawn to remind me that later I want pansies around a similar lawn area here. Notes would serve the same purpose. So would describing our garden areas instead of posting pics here.

There's a web site that I used to infrequently visit, which had pictures of a little garden 'house' of the owner. Recently I visited, to find she had deleted almost every one of the pics I loved so, replacing them with handmade collectables for sale. The little house is forever lost to me.

I don't think I have any borrowed photos. I have quite a few of my own so I burn them to a CD a couple of times a year.
Everyone is free to copy my pictures.

Libby, if I understand you correctly it would be OK to copy your pictures? It's pictures like yours and others that help me plan my plant placements.
I'd love to be able to store some favorite cottage garden photo's on a CD, it would mean a lot to me.
Before I forget if any of mine are of interest to anyone go ahead and copy even if they are just to remind you of what not to do LOL.

Remember when there was the big commotion on GW over iVillage putting up the 'terms of service' and people were afraid iVillage was going to 'use their photos' -- I had to laugh because mine always have a hose or a forgotten bucket or something ugly that renders them unusable except to me, LOL.

If anybody wants to copy mine, do please let me know, so I can feel terribly flattered that anybody cared.

I copied one of Glenda's that has a yellow daylily, echinacea and perennial phlox blooming together, just to remind me that the combos that I put together actually DO bloom together, somewhere, just not here. Mine bloomed in sequence.

Nell, A bucket or something ugly can be easily photoshopped out these days. That isn't going to stop your photos from being used.

I understood what you meant about borrowing photos, Nell, and I agree with you that it is perfectly legal to do so. Because you are only using them for personal use. I already have so many of my own photos on my computer, that I don't want to stockpile any others. I do often leave the High Country Gardens catalog on my coffee table to look at again and again--stuff dreams are made of! They have a lot of photos of fully planted areas with mature plants.

Sierra, I forgot to make mention of the holding beds in my previous post. That is a good idea. People have mentioned holding beds from time to time, but it never occurred to me that it might be a good thing for me to do.

Since I blog, I post a lot of photos. My photos show up in Google Image searches as well. I've just recently started watermarking some of them, but those can be cropped out by a clever person. However, I have granted a "Creative Commons" use of mine since my blog is syndicated. Meaning, if someone uses a photo, they've got to give the owner the credit. The real concern for most folks is that no one PROFITS from the reuse of the material without permission. Heck, I don't even profit from my work!

Okay, legal or not, I use photos from all over the internet for my personal inspiration. I put them in a slide show mode and just relax and enjoy them. If I'm upset about a non-gardening problem, I can literally feel my blood pressure lower as I look at all the beauty in the world of gardening. Many of your photos are there and I hope you're all flattered that they are admired. If some of mine are used in this manner, I'm definately complimented beyond words. I would never use them for profit - promise.

Holding beds? Are these beds you plant things in until you figure out where you want them? I just leave them in their pots and move things around. Wont planting something in the ground then shifting it a few times around the garden damage the root structure?

Yes, Mihai, that is what holding beds are. You have to dig wide and deep, so as not to damage root structure. Also it is good to be sure to pack soil in tightly, when you move a plant to prevent any air pockets from being amongst the roots.

Holding beds....hmmm, I think that's my entire garden! When I buy one plant, it seems like I move 20 around. I think this is a great topic for a blog article.

Cameron, there was somebody on GW who wrote that they moved their plants around so often that when the wheelbarrow came past their plants they almost jumped in on their own. I'll never forget that since it struck me as so funny. Now that I have more experience, I have started to notice my plants starting to lean towards my own wheelbarrow.
