Grow lights for fig cuttings

Hello Everyone,

Just a quick question on wintering fig cuttings in perilite under grow lights for the winter. Wondering what sort of set up to use, what types of bulbs and containers ect.

Matt here is a link to the spectrums if you read thru carefully its explains the different ones for sifferent stages of growth, then the last link to a site that has grow lights for different stages and bulbs . Maybe this will give you some idea;s and needed info.

You most certainly can carry those cuttings thru the winter by keeping them indoors or in a greenhouse. I would not allow those small cuttings pictured to become dormant. You would likely loose them all if you did. Just for added information........in zone 9 it is much easier to begin rooting your fig cuttings in early January rather than earlier. Sometimes it is a real PITA to start rooting fig cuttings indoors too early (i.e. before January). However, it most certainly can be done. You will just have to pay close attention to lighting and moisture control until such time as you can move them completely outdoors. Best of luck to you. Dan

P.S. There is some logic in what you are saying. I read somewhere that it may be better to do a 'slanting' cut for (general) rootings. It has something to do with exposing more of the cambiun layer (live part under the bark). This may or may not apply to figs. I also read that specific to figs, it is good to bury cuttings, in winter, 'upside-down' so that the ends callus and root easier the followinfg spring. BIG Al (tapla), please help!... George(NJ).

Sure, there are a variety of grow light led bulbs you can use, and fairly cheap. Some come with clip on or corded plug in connections and others are like regular screw on bulbs. You can get them on any online retailer.

Steve nice grow light 4 banks , mine is same maker 1 bank that i bought.

I should also mention that I would only use lights for my 1st year trees that might still be tender from the summer and not good candidates for storing dormant. I have found that my trees seem to have better growth when coming out of a dormancy.

Loslunasfarms, thats good to hear as mine are in that situation as they were started this seaason so i try the grow light just this season as i dont think i need it anymore except maybe to grow some veggies from seed. Sorry i did not mean to post grow light address twice i dont know what i was thinking.
