LOL at a new low of hiding a plant in the basement! Karen and Hong LOL at how we all totally do that... trying to hide it long enough to say something isn't new truthfully. or saying "I've had that" and meaning "i've had that since I got it 10 minutes ago." :P Val-- yes, after a while they catch on. I was laughing at this and he asked what I was laughing at. I told him it was about other people who try to hide new plant purchases. he was like "Oh, like you do?" Not as sneaky as I think :P But truthfully, i rarely actually buy something. It's more like trades, and I try to sell something to cover my costs. He doesn't like the idea of getting more though. He feels like indoor plants are inherently dirty (think Adrian Monk kind of personality and you've got it) and that plants outside are great. Coupled with a move, he feels they are wastes of time, space, and totally all cluttery lol. I sometimes hide them in my bag. I will then put them in the back room when he's in the shower and try to blend them in. Then a month or so later, I may move them to the right position :)

greendesert, I visited Fanicks nursery a couple of weeks ago. They knew I was coming because I called them and asked them if there was room for a semi truck. Was a little tight but I made it through. I picked up a couple of Jujube trees from them and a Loquat tree. They have a few fig variants, A nice citrus selection along with a large fruit tree inventory. The fragrance from the flowers was filling the air. It is a nice place to visit and the next time I visit them I will drive away with much more plants. In my opinion, The prices are not great or bad. Idabean's so right about saving up to get the biggest tree you can, after lots of research. I agree ---- be careful where you shop. Sometimes cheaper is not best in the long run. Five years ago we bought a beautiful Heritage River Birch from a large nursery center. That nursery did not plant stock, so we had to have it picked up and planted by a landscaper --- not cheap. A few years later one of the trunks developed a borer and we eventually removed it. Then came hurricane Irene. Our birch came down when a wind surge twisted the center trunk around, hitting the other trunk. As we were cutting it up we noticed that the tree, which we thought had three trunks, was actually three trees that had been wired together with a thick band underneath the soil level! From the narrow size of the three trunks below the band and the way their trunks thickened out above, it was pretty obvious that our tree was doomed from the start. But there was no way we could have known this until the tree died. Last year we went to a very reputable (other) nursery and bought a single trunk 10 ft Cully birch. This nurseryman discouraged us from getting a multi-trunk birch because of the high winds along our river. Yes, the second tree was more expensive than the first, but it had been dug into the ground at the nursery, was mounded up and well-watered -- very healthy looking. The second nursery did install their own stock. We expected their service to be double the cost of the tree because they charged by the hour for two men. But since we had a stump removal service come beforehand and grind out the hole and my husband and I also dug out even more afterward, it cost far less than we had expected. I also think because this nursery was planting their own stock, they took great care. The tree arrived completely encased in a burlap wrap. The two nurserymen were extremely aware about placement of the tree on site, they brought in extra dirt, they mounded up and graded underneath. When they left it looked like the tree had always been there. I look at a tree as an investment. Take your time and investigate the places people suggest. Molie

Brandon, the Brown Turkey has a bad reputation among fig connoisseurs as an insipid tasting fig. There are others so much better, it's not the fave of many. Here in Southern California we have the perfect climate (Mediterranean) for figs. Dry Summer Heat and mild winters. So many great varieties grow here, and fig trees are big, we choose only the best. Some are hard to find commercially. Most garden centers will have BT or Hardy Chicago. Sometimes other varieties will pop up. The good ones are treasured by fig lovers and cuttings passed between them.
