I've ordered from Burnt Ridge each year for the past 5. They're always my primary mail-order nursery, though I have only bought figs from there last year.

I bought Violette du Bordeaux and Atreano. VdB grew well, but Atreano was easily one of my best growers for 08. Neither produced fruit this year (actually, I think VdB did try, but the squirrels removed them early).

the plants weren't exceptionally large (I've gotten bigger from other places) but they do seem to have done well.

Here is my Atreano from them, they are in the middle pots, the back pots are Violettas. Burntridge has been a good nursery to me so far.

The horizontal pots were an experiment with just burying fig cuttings. It worked just fine and I didnt have to baby them to much.

Loslunas, is that the about the size they on arrival?? Is it just the roots?
Chills, are you saying that they probably won't produce fruit the first year?? Are there any varieties that might have a better chance? hardier? Really would like fruit the first year.

The Atreanos I ordered were about 2 feet long with about.75" in girth. Approx 1 foot was the rooted part. I was very impressed, but I emailed them also to tell them I wanted the biggest ones and they said they would try to accommodate me. The pics you see of the figs are from the first year. I got about 4 figs, all were very good. The trees are now about 4 feet tall.

There are many factors which may help/hinder fruiting in the first year. (My biggest hinderance is shade) My plants were Atreano- 2 feet or so, VdB maybe a foot tall at most.

I would bet on not getting fruit the first year, so if it happens it is a special treat, if it doesn't happen you're just waiting another year (hopefully just one). Remember, if you plant most kinds of fruit trees, you're looking at 3-5 years at best for fruit production (well maybe 1 for a mulberry)

Good idea, Loslunas, certainly doesn't hurt to ask ahead of time for larger size if the have.
Since these are a gift for a fig lover, hopefully at least ONE variety will give something the first year.
Any suggestions on maybe a different variety than i mentioned.. for better chance of first year crop?

Email the gentleman at www.figs4fun.com He is a very knowledgeable guy and is based out of San Diego. He has some very good varieties and might also be able to suggest the best for your area in terms of the Bay areas heat and rain.

Hi Dee,

The figs you chose are good figs. You did know that two of the four you chose are San Pedro type figs, right? Desert King and Grantham Royal are both San Pedro type. The breba crop is self-pollinating, but the main crop requires pollination - which you probably won't have. Therefore, the main crop figs will not ripen. Both varieties are great figs, but I just wanted you to know this in case you didn't.

If you want fruit quickly you can buy a larger tree. Of course, you "pay for this time". Edible Landscaping sells 5 gal. trees (at a much higher price). If you want a good fig that will fruit as early as any get a Celeste. I had some Celeste that were rooted last year and began this year as 10" tall plants. Some of them made a handful of figs this year.

Henry, i had no idea about any of the types...All Burnt Ridge mentioned was that the Italian honey had an early crop, the others just have the later crop. So I won't have any ripening on the Grantham or Desert King?? Well that's not good!! I will contact your email.. Hopefully i can pick something different. Thanks
