Newbie w/great seedling needs help w/ identifying?

Hi again- please indulge a newbie-

Here is a seedling (from a bird) fig I transplanted when about 12" tall to a spot in an abandoned gravel driveway. I put it on a drip system, left it alone for about 4 years (except to pick figs). It is now over 10 feet tall, about 12 feet across- like a huge shrub. The figs are small, green (w/slight sunny-side blush), very abundant, strawberry red center and delicious.

Can anyone tell me what it may be? I want to be able to take cuttings and share them. I call it my Sweet Satchel.

You've answered your own question, it's a seedling -- so zero history as a variety/cultivar.

Now that you've given it a name, and intend to pass it on, it will soon have a history, but you're the one writing it for the moment.

Just the answer I wanted to hear- thank-you for taking the time!

Also- has anyone heard of Rolling River Nursery in Orleans, CA? I just ordered 7 figs and they arrived in fabulous condition- all at least 2-yrs old and VERY healthy- a very good start for next Spring's planting. Check them out at www.rollingrivernursery.com if you haven't already....

Thanks for all your replies! I'll try to describe the space better. My yard is very small (12' x 18'). Imagine a cement rectangle whereon a wooden deck will be built along with two stationary brick containers. The one brick container being built, referenced above), is at one end corner of the yard. The one wall there (the 7' one) leads to a breezeway (not included in the measurements)but that is a separate, utilitarian space for bike, air conditioning unit, sundry items). There is a 5' empty space there for access to the breezeway, or simply a standing place if a larger group is gathered, or perhaps for a Big Green Egg. There is a wooden bench being built that will run along the above container around the back wall (14')and end with a smaller 2' x 2' brick container being built for a focal tree: an azara microphylla variegata pruned to a single limbed tree. (the remaining 2' is empty to allow the foor to the alleyway to be opened if needed). Although the bench will have the ability to seat quite a number of people, there will only be a small table at the "elbow" of the bench along the larger container for two of us to have morning coffee or evening martinis. A larger folding table will be brought out if we entertain a larger group for a sit down, outdoor dinner. There will be space along a third wall for potted plants - my kitchen herbs, both annuals (lemon verbena & basils)as well as perennial herbs - they have to be movable because there will be an access panel to a cellar door that will now be covered by the wooden deck. One flowerbox will be under a window for colorful annuals. I hope that gives a clearer picture, wellspring.And 1pinkmountain, thanks, I didn't realize a small buddleia would be happy in a pot!

Help a Newbie w/a Lotus

I'm about an hour south of Lakeland and have no troubles growing lotus, even in the FL summer. Granted our climate isn't as moderate as that of the mid-Atlantic states, but with a couple adjustments, it isn't a hindrance either. My lotus ponds are largely unshaded, but what I do to moderate the effects of heat is make sure the tuber has plenty of soil...I keep mine in 5-6" of compacted soil. And all the ponds (I use liners)are dug so the tubers are below ground level. The surrounding soil acts as insulation to prevent the soil temp in the ponds from getting too high. So assuming you are going to bury your pre-form, you should have no troubles at all. If you have any questions...don't hesitate to ask.

H. - If you want to trade - you need to have named plants. But your unnamed plants are perfect for your friends and family. Your friend will be very happy if you restart a plant for her. Next time - when you want to add another plant to your collection - get a named one - and some interesting one you will enjoy - and people would want to trade for. Thanks Jodi! These bulbs were bought off of ebay as a gift for me, I didnt see the auction/s personally, and the gifter said the only info was that they were pink & wine, which they came labeled as. I am figuring they are the more common type, but ya never know? I did browse through all the crinum auctions over the last several days, ongoing and ended auctions..no luck. I am figuring that the "wine" one may be 'milk & wine', but then again, since the other is just labeled 'pink', the other may only say 'wine' referring to the color of the blooms. Whatever they are, I am sure I will love them and they will be beautiful. I guess I should put them in a bigger pot, they are in a pretty little one right now just till I figure out what I'm doing, and so they can be on top of the fridge with that lil bit of bottom heat. I think DH would pitch a cow if I put a big old ceramic pot up there, lmao! not that I would, but I could just see that scene playing out in my head! Hi Patricia! Thanks, I wish I could put them in the ground. We'll see what they look like after they bloom, maybe if they are a hardier type, or even to zone 8, I may be able to get away with mulching them real good over the winter. I have had other plants survive for a few years here that are supposedly zones 9 and up..we'll seeeee :) Dumb question here...are they evergreen in warmer zones? Would the foliage die down in say, zones 8 or 9 and come back in the spring? thanks again guys! Daniella

I checked out the Rolling River Nursey web site - now if someone can tell me about Ficus cerigus (Google search was a blank). I hope it's not one of those 'my face is red' deals......Elder

Oh my gosh- I remember thinking about that when I first logged on to their site- then I got sucked into the website and forgot all about it- I'm really glad I did, although I am really new at this and I'm sure the mistake they made didn't make as big a lingering (obviously) impression on me as it would to a more experienced "fig" person.

I actually forgot all about the name and will be notifying them as to the mistake asap.

In the meantime, I would be happy to post pix of the "trees" I have received and will let you be the judge... and if I've been duped, I will still have figs as 2 of the gorgeous trees have figs on them!

Thank you for reminding me of this and I will try to post the pix within a couple days.

Yes, be (very) carefull!
Had just tried to purchace one (1) item from the
(never-heard-of) 'Rolling River Nursey' and then
looking at my 'shopping cart' saw about 10 more
item??? atached!!! Maybe, it is just a matter
of a new-website-construction-problem... who knows...

Just received two trees from Rolling River, and they were quick delivery and very nice large plants (5' plus) in 6" tall pots.

Yes, Figs4fun buys trees sometimes. Already ordered more than a dozen this month.
