pinus densiflora life expectancy in southern US

I recently visited the Missouri Botanical Garden's Japanese Garden and saw some impressive pinus densiflora plantings. I have a Japanese Red on the back of my lot, almost forgotten but now occasionally peeking out at five feet high. I have heard that I should not expect it to live over 20 to 25 years here, due to its inability to cope with local diseases. Is this true? It appears some make it past 25, maybe just lucky.
