Newbie here and at the Lily Auction

I have been growing dayliles for more then 10 years; and as unbelievable as it sounds I just found you.

Another first this year was finding the Lily Auction.

Before this I was buying from breeders etc.

Finding the LA was wonderful; but maybe disasterous as my beds were all chock-a-block (I never sell)

Anyway I had to expand my gardens much to my husbands dismay. He keeps telling me I'm old and should be downsizing and not expanding; but then he doesn't have this daylily addiction that I have.

I have been reading past posts here and have been glued to this site.

I am interested in a site that would name the really good people to buy from.........no no no, I can't buy anymore (until next year)

My very favorite seller on the LA was Gavin. I got a couple of his collections. One of the plants he had to substitute; and would you believe he substituted with April La Quinta.

I thought I died and went to daylily heaven.

Another seller that I got nice plants from was Calvin Becton.

Some of the plants I got were kind of small and I won't go back to those sellers. All in all it was a very good experience.

I'll close for now before you all get sick of me.

Welcome in Maizey, what took you so long? :) Seriously, I'm glad you finally found this site. I think you're going to love it here and make lots of new dl friends.
As for good sellers, if you do a search of this forum with something like Good LA sellers, you'll find several threads where members have recommended LA sellers they've purchased from.
As you've probably figured out by now...we love to see each others dl's so if you can, post some of your beauties here for us to drool over. LOL
I'm way down in south central AL, so my main dl season is winding down fast, but I do have quite a few rebloomers putting up scapes so I'll continue to post photos as they bloom. Sometimes the reblooms are so different from the first blooms so it's interesting to see them side by side.

Again, welcome in, and jump on in and get your feet wet. There's lots of wonderful members here for you to meet.

This is a wonderful, friendly, and informative place. I know I've really enjoyed it. I think you will too.

Can we look forward to seeing some pics of your daylilies?

Actually some guidelines to follow: 1) Please, always hold your feedback until you get the plant. 2) If there is a problem when you receive the plant, never leave negative feedback WITHOUT first contacting the seller and letting them know of your dissatisfaction. 3) If you are not happy with the seller's response or you do not get a response, you can leave negative feedback if you like. However, we suggest that you first try to use our mediation services. To do this, please use the "Support/Questions" link at the bottom of the Lily Auction pages. The goal should be to get satisfaction. We will look at both sides of the issue and then offer our opinion. 4) Sellers are never allowed to make retaliatory feedback. However, sellers can post negative feedback only when they are not paid or have documentation that they were treated with rudness or verbal abuse. 5) Negative feedback may be removed after mediation and/or after the mutual consent of both seller and buyer. Again, use the "support/questions" link at the bottom of the Lily Auction pages to request mediation. I think the two main factors that promote good relations between buyers and sellers is 1) accurate disclosure and 2) good communication. I hope this helps some of you newbies. Thanks for the welcome! Well I'm bidding on two more auctions for seeds, and I've already won auctions from both of the sellers, so I'm trying to take advantage and "combine" shipping. And one is a cross with Rose F Kennedy ($13.00 for 5 seeds so far) and so those seeds should produce real beauties right? (I dunno, maybe most of these seeds will turn out to be duds?) Of course rationalization is one of the hallmarks of addiction, lol. But seriously, many hobbies are more expensive than gardening, like skiing, or boating, even collecting chotchkes. Heck people drop $50 or $100 or more for dinner and drinks or a night out, and nothing to show for it but a memory of a good time. At least I will have beautiful flowers that bloom every year. :)

If you use paypal it converts the payments to US dollars, and if you need to see what the exchange rate is just google "currency exchange" and it will take you to a calculator that will convert for example: 1.00 GBP = 1.99040 USD United Kingdom Pounds United States Dollars 1 GBP = 1.99040 USD 1 USD = 0.502411 GBP I purchase things from outside the US occasionally, and will watch the Dollars value, when the Dollar is strong is the time for me to buy (it hasn't been lately). I am pretty sure phytosanitary permits are required for you to receive plants, the fees are usually not too high, the key would be to find some other people to buy with you and have everything shipped together, then you could always trade later. I know Curt Hanson also ships to Europe.

Stop watering temporarily, then only water about once a week unless it's very hot and dry, or unless it rains, in which case you would NOT water. Your lilies can stay in the ground, provided they are 5-6 inches below the surface. If you want them to come back bigger each year, you have to feed them. I do this by leaving the dried stalks in place, then I dig around them in a circle about 12 inches out from the center. I dig a trench about 3-4 inches deep. I fill the trench with a mixture of blood meal, bone meal and a bit of epsom salts. Then I cover it up and water it. If you leave it dry, animals will smell the blood and bone meal and dig it up. You have to do this for each lily. Lots of gardeners don't use the bone meal, because they believe flowers call mainly for potassium, but bone meal contains a lot of phosphorous which helps build big bulbs and healthy roots. My Orientals and Orientpets are all over 7 feet tall and each one has had over a hundred blossoms this summer. So I say, something must be working right. I got it as a gift from someone I ordered from on the LA; but that day I received so many plants I just wanted to get them in the ground and wasn't paying attention.
I had no idea what a beauty this plant would be/

Hi Maizey, Welcome to the forum. Ten plus years puts you way ahead of a lot of us....you're sure no newbie to daylilies. Between the LA and this forum you have found your way to major daylily debt. But maybe you have more self control than many of us. Please do share your pics of your DL's. I'm always looking for new beauties to add to my wanted list.

Welcome! You are way ahead of me. I just really got serious about daylilies about a year ago. You lucky duck! Shadows of the Rainbow is truly beautiful. I have not seen it before (that I remember. I am getting so old I tend to forget names...people, places, plants, etc.) Thanks for sharing. Please post some more pictures of your beauties.

Welcome! Way up at the top of the page next to the words Garden Web are the words "Welcome!Your Profile or Log Out".Click on your profile and go down to where it says"Nickname". Put Maizey in the box and click the "save" thing and you should be good to go!

That's the problem, I have gone to my profile and tried to change my name. It just won't highlight it oor change it. I must have tried a hundred times last night. Finally after midnight my husband came and dragged me off this site so I'd go to bed.

Hi Maizey: I'm totally new to daylilies this year and so glad I decided to take the plunge. Like you, I've found so much information on this forum. And those pictures as just so beautiful it makes you want to go out and get more.

The reason I ask, is that I'm keeping a list of people who post here, (username, zone, first name and state.)

I shared that list a couple of months ago, but continue to update it, and will share it again in a couple of months. It sounds like you will be sticking around for good, esp. since you're already a hemeroholic!

I am from Massachusetts.
The new daylilies that I bought on the LA are blooming; but my others are just getting started.
The second week of July is peak here.

This might go against the rules, but can't see what it would hurt. If all else fails and you have another email address, you could reregister with your new name, with that address.

I asked about changing your name in the test forum, and got a response from a very experienced person, who has helped people do that sort of thing.

It's way over my head, but you could probably ask chemocurl (the one who listed instructions), and she might be able to walk you through it.

Don't give up, if you still want to change your name.
