Popularity of Figs amongst 'peoples'

It seems that figs to many Americans are something you get in a package of "Fig Newtons" and a fresh fig is something they have never tried. It is also uncanny that the only groups of people that really know anything about figs are:

Southerners, Californians, Arizonans, the PNW folks, Italians, Greeks, Mexicans, Arabs, Southern Euopeans in general and and even the British are well aware of them. In my area of the country they enjoy some popularity. It is my hope that people in other areas of the country will try them. I had a friend who is Mexican American that moved here a few years ago and was excited to learn we can grow figs in Virginia. Figs seem to be a common bond amongst these groups and I find myself exchanging cuttings with my Greek neighbors. They were even so nice to bring me over some very small, green, but very sweet figs along with some cuttings to grow.
