pinus strobiformis

Can anyone tell me about pinus strobiformis please? I've read that it is sometimes treated as subspecies brachytera of pinus ayacahuite so I presume it is similar to a normal ayacahuite, yes, no? Also, which pine has the longest leaves as I was surprised to fine pinus palustris wasn't the longest. Thanks

I have some seed of pinus strobiformis it grows in W North
America and W Mexico has dense short dark green foliage.It
should be Z7 hardy maybe Z6.

There was a thorough discussion about these 2 species, as well as P. flexilis a while ago. Here's a long quote from one of pineresin's posts which should clear this up for you.

"True Pinus strobiformis Engelm., as described by George Engelmann in 1848, is a Mexican endemic, Chihuahua south to Jalisco. The type specimen was collected at Cusihuirachic in southern Chihuahua (about 90km southwest of Chihuahua City)

Pinus ayacahuite var. brachyptera G.R.Shaw (1909) is a nomenclatural synonym of P. strobiformis - the name is based on the same type specimen, with Shaw citing Engelmann's name in his publication. So the two are one and the same, down to the individual tree; their treatment as different in Perry's Pines of Mexico is incorrect.

Pinus reflexa (Engelmann) Engelmann, a.k.a. Pinus flexilis var. reflexa Engelmann, is what you have in NM and AZ; Sudworth (and the US Forest Service following him) also call it "Pinus strobiformis", but it is not the same as Engelmann's Pinus strobiformis, differing in smaller cones with less prolonged scales, and needles with serration weakly defined and only on the outer half of the needle (fully serrated in P. strobiformis). It may well be a natural hybrid (area of hybrid introgression) between P. strobiformis and P. flexilis. This is very likely what Forest Farm are selling (but you could always ask them where their seed is from!). Note also the cultivar 'Vanderwolf's Pyramid' belongs here.

Pinus flexilis - CO, UT, NV, northwards - has even smaller cones, and smooth needles with no serration at all."

Sorry, Typo. Yes 'Pina Nevada'. Out of 10, I think 2 are left and they dont look like they are thriving. Even though the strobiformis understock is healthy as can be. I didnt leave a lot of understock, just a few small branches so that isnt the problem. Thats why I started to think that sylvestris or even mugo could be a better match. I will need to look up what cembroides is closely related to and see if that helps at all in the future.

Hey, John. It does look like it could be a 'Loma Linda', but sadly it is not doing well.. It might be fun for you to propagate the one at the Chicago Botanic Garden to insure that you have the right cultivar (and a healthy one!) -Sam

There's a broom of "strobiformis" growing without harm in a zone 4 arboretum fyi. I belive it's 'Coronado' which leads me to believe there are certainly some very cold-hardy origins of this northern species (Pinus reflexa).

I'm sure humidity will do these in around my parts. So far so good on this little 2'x2' broom in Iowa but due to the density this one needs annual needle cleanout or it's an invitation for trouble. I don't think I'd plant this one here, the species that is, I'd just be wasting space on a diseased specimen probably (and the broom eventually). It'll probably contract pine blister or anything that will attack it due to it's inability to cope with the humidy, thus weakening it.

Anyway, just a note about the zone 4 aspect/part.
