What zone best for what fig?

I have seen many posting asking what fig tree will work for my area. I was wondering if anyone has a list of figs that will grow in the different zones? I am talking about ones that will over winter outside. Not ones that have to be moved inside each winter.

I know that George listed figs that grow well in different regions of the country. But each of these regions have more that one zone.

I thought if no one had a list of figs in different zones maybe the forum could come up with a list and Pitangadiego could add it to his Figs4fun website.

The way I see it, is that all the 'common figs'
(Ficus Carica) varieties are more or less the SAME
as far the USDA Zone (Minimum Winter Temperature) goes.
Some may be slightly different, e.g., I observed that Petit Nigra
(and similar), are more prone to winter colds.
On the other hand Hardy Chicago has been touted to rebound
from any winter kills and produce fruit the same year (this
does not mean that it any hardier, just that it rebounds
quicker than others!).

My understanding is that for Zone 8 (and hotter) figs trees
need not be winter protected, while for all those in zones
7 (and colder) do.

Having said that, there are other factors that determine
whether a certain fig cultivar performs in your area or
not (e.g.,humidity).

What I quoted before does not come form my experience.
I was just quoting Ray Givan's (a GA fig expert)
suggestion for the 4 top figs suitable for various US
regions for those fig starting people that are somewhat
confused (like I was, and possiblty still am!).

For the sake of completness, here is Ray's recommendation.
My Ray's booklet is old, if anybody has a newer edition,
or knows otherwise, please stand up!

1. Northeast (warm humid summers; cold winters)
-- Brown Turkey, Italian Everbearing, Mission and Kadota.

2. Southeast (hot, humid summers; mild winters)
-- Celeste, Brown Turkey, Nero and Conadria.

3. Midwest (hot, humid summers; cold winters)
-- Brown Turkey, Hardy Chicago, Mission and Kadota.

4. Northwest (cool summers; wet, cool winters)
-- King, Latarula, Adriatic and Osborn Prolific.

5. Southwest (warm to hot summers; wet winters)
-- Mission, California Brown Turkey, Brunswick and Kadota.

I have always wondered where Arkansas fit in those regions. Is it Southeast, Midwest, or Southwest? All three weather patterns seem to fit where I live.

If your winters aren't too cold then definitely consider Desert King. It sets a lot more brebas than most other varieties. It produces large figs that taste very good. I have one and it starts the fig season early a month before any of the main crop figs ripen. Not sure if anyone is growing these successfully in zone 7 though. Joe

Martin that is a great looking 'orchard' (Is orchard the right word for fig trees?). If I can figure out how to make sure that they are watered every day I will try that. My Latarrula started in a container but I couldn't get to it every day to water so it dropped its figs. Last year I planted it in ground but with the bad weather I didnt get any this year either and they are supposed to be good here. I use tanglefoot for my grapes and cherries and it works very well to keep ants away. Wild forager, 70 figs is better than I have ever had from in-ground fig trees yet altho my Petite negri probably had that many that did not ripen this year. Pauly22 That give me some hope. I do use the pinching method already so will use it for the DK too. One thing I am wondering about is how to keep it small but it's only 2 years old now so it's not too much or a worry yet. This is my first try as a bush-type instead of single-stem tree. I did prune my trees a bit this Spring and I am wondering if having to grow from non-apical buds slowed them down some. Maybe next Spring I'll forget the pruning until they reach the 6 leaf stage then pinch. Daniel

Vienna is zone 8a, so almost any fig can survive in this city unless there is some extraordinary cold winter. Temperatures rarely drop below 0 F, usually not below 5 F. Planty of figs in Vienna. I am myself about 80 km from Vienna in zone 7a. Figs usually survive here, but every 4th 5th winter die to the ground, when temperatures are near to 0 F. Since I grow figs in form of bush, it is no problem, Figs grow fast, so after 2 years you have nice tree. So I would say zone 7 is ok for growing figs. Figs will almost always survive on roots and recover and if there are a few mild winters - you will have nice trees and nice harvests. Temperatures are not everything. Most imporant is the timing of frosts. If they come in the middle of dormancy - it is not so big problem. If they come after warm spell in February - most figs are usually damaged. No cultivar of common fig is absolutely winter resistant in zone 7 or lower. Even in zone 8 it can freeze once a decade. I have seen a lot of cultivars and tried myseld and I am pretty sure about this.

Terry, Root Riot is a small, sponge-like 'plug' into which the cutting is inserted. This gets dropped into a tray filled with (for example) a bunch of empty 6 packs. A tray with 12 empty 6 packs would hold 1 'plug' per cell for 72 cuttings. The cuttings don't need light initially - they need a humid environment in order to put out roots. That's what the plastic dome over the tray does - it keeps the moisture in. If you have the cuttings in some kind of mix, that will work also - just maybe not as high a success rate in rooting. Once the cuttings are putting out roots, you can put them into a larger container if you are using Root Riot or leave them in the container you are using if it is large enough. Now, you want the 'tree' to put out leaves. It may already have leaves (but we are hoping for roots first in order to feed the tree). Even now, I keep the plants away from direct sunlight. Cut the bottom off a liter or larger plastic soda bottle or the bottom off a gallon milk jug. Place it over the plant to keep the humidity high. Keep the young plant out of direct sunlight - it can overheat. Gently acclimate (harden off) the tree to outdoors and remove the cover over time. I put them under a very shady part of the deck for a few weeks and remove the cover for a few hours and slowly move them out into the sun. Go slowly here - better to get less than optimal results than to kill the plant. Eventually you should have a healthy baby tree throwing off roots and branches. By the 2nd summer you should be picking a fig or two (after over wintering - a whole different pain in the bottom - and transplanting into a larger container or two).
