Orange/ditch daylilies in NC

I'm in 7b in North Carolina. I planted some orange/ditch daylilies a year ago (June 2011) in my new raised beds, not knowing that they are considered invasive. So far, after one year, they are behaving quite well (above-ground where I can see, anyway) and do not seem to be spreading with any kind of speed. Does that mean I am safe, or should I go ahead and dig them up now, before they take over everything? I do really like them, but I do not want them taking over the other plants (yellow daylilies, snapdragons, irises, astilbe, mum, bleeding heart, and a few others).

Are other daylilies better-behaved? Thanks for any advice!

It would take a long time before a problem would occur in a new bed such as yours, and there are ways to control the situation by simply taking a shovel and cutting into the ground around the lilies about 8 inches down or a little more and cutting off any "runners" from producing new babies once or twice a year, new beds are pretty easy to control. They really haven't even established yet. Keeping a watch on these type of lilies from the beginning makes a great difference. Andrea

I've one - in the ditch - that CAN rebloom if the county lets it grow. Since they are mowing today, I doubt I will see it this year. After all, the reblooming gene that is so prized in the garden daylilies came from somewhere!

Thanks! I do notice some roots in other areas I plant things. I guess that means they have already started, huh? I am considering taking some of them out and putting some other things in, but I have a limited budget. I like the idea of the shovel. I could do that every spring and fall. Thanks!

Are you saying that orange day lilies are somehow DIFFERENT in their root structure than other day lilies? I have several colors and do not see how one is different than another when they are not blooming and I am moving them around. I planted the outside of my property in the ditch with a double orange I had a bulk of due to a hand me down when a fried decided to clean out an entire garden. They are framed by the road and woods. They are not likely to move into the woods due to shade and the road will keep them from moving forward. My goal was to choke out weeds and saplings and it seems to be working well. The plus side is the walkers all really appreciate when they are in bloom.

From what I can find, most daylilies are not as invasive or as crazy as the ditch/tawny ones. I decided I am going to move them. They will go beside my house, where they can grow as freely as they want. :) I actually found some purple daylilies, daisies, and Stella daylies (no yelling...I really do like them) on sale, so I will move the ditch daylilies tomorrow and cross my fingers they will be okay (they sound very tough). The new ones will go in the sunny section. Another section is shadier, so we will do astible, bleeding hearts, and lily of valleys next spring. It is fun to experiment!
