I love the single flowered type, myself. When I was starting up my garden, a friend gave me some of her mom's extras, including some assorted single hollyhocks. Alas, I don't know where she got them or what strain. But, they were differing shades of pink - all gorgeous. Last year was my first year I didn't have any come back, so I bought some seeds. (I forget the variety, but Burpee from Menards) None have bloomed so far, and we'll be moving shortly, so I may never know how they turned out...

I love the single flowered types also. I like the pastels with the peachy colored ones being my favorite.

Well this is interesting - you all like the single-flowered ones. Me too, in pretty much any shade. They are such an impressively tall plant and so long-blooming.

Grant - "clowns pants" is so funny- your family must be a witty bunch.

Yes, I prefer the old fashioned single flowered, too. Right now, I've got the purple one similar to the 3rd picture. I recently traded for a peachy pink one like the 1st picture. I like all different colors, so not too picky on that one, as long as they're not double! ;o)

Lynne your plants and pics are great. It's nice to see such happy, healthy plants in bloom. Thanks for sharing them.

I've noticed some of my seeds planted just a few days ago are already up. Yay. I've always found if I can just get them large enough to have a true leaf or three, that they'll bloom for me the next spring/summer. I'm just mimicking nature of course, where mature hollyhocks are dropping their seeds which sprout now to bloom next year generally.

In any case, thanks for the replies and pics. Keep them coming.

hi all - I love the old fashioned, single hollyhocks in just about any colour. Right now I've got some gorgeous whites and they topped out this year at about 12 feet! They are past prime now, but I haven't the heart to cut 'em.

I love Hollyhocks. In the garden I had at my last home, I bought what I thought to be a pink hollyhock, but when it bloomed it was maroon - I think the variety was The Watchman. I still have quite a few seeds (these would be from 2005) so I'm not sure they're still viable. But they are an heirloom variety and I'd be happy to send out a few packets if anyone is interested. Just email with your address and send a self-addressed stamped envelope.

Well, I am awfully surprised to read so many prefer the single-flowered - thought I was nearly the only-lonely.

I do like all forms and colors and heights of hh, but my favorites are the single-flowered, and I love the plain clear yellow. Yes lynnencfan less is sometimes more.
