Hi, ID Q, and transplant Q

Thought I'd pop in and introduce myself and my fig tree. lol I never would have guessed there would be a forum just for fig trees, but then again, I never would have guessed that I'd like fig trees before we bought a house that had one, but they are actually quite yummy, no matter what my friends say. ;)

So here is my tree. I'm wondering if anyone knows the variety. Not that I even know enough that it would mean anything to me, but it would be cool if I could know and sound like I know what I'm talking about, right?

And finally, I was wondering if anyone had any advice on transplanting this baby fig tree? I want to give it to my friend that also actually likes figs, yes, I found one! I'm very fortunate to live in a very mild climate, but I'm wondering if I should try to transfer it to a pot now, or wait until spring. I thought I'd wait to give it to her to see if it survives and winter and being transplanted, I just didn't know which to try first. Thanks! Here it is nestled among a volunteer tomato plant. Who says being sloppy doesn't pay off?

WOW! Don't I wish I could have a Fig tree like that here in the Northeast. May you enjoy every last one of them.

Hi Catankgirl,
Welcome to the club! If you think this is a seedling, you might want to avoid it and give your friend one of the suckers growing up from the base of your big tree. A seedling is a unknown thing -- could be good, bad, or somewhere in between. If you think you can get enough roots, then go ahead. Just be prepared to baby it by keeping it out of direct sunlight for a week or two until it has a chance to get its roots into gear. Pinch off all but the top two leaves, and keep it very well watered the whole time, and re-introduce it very gradually to sun again.

Cottonwoods are a relative of willow there a types of poplar. There are different kinds of cottonwood trees plains,Eastern,swamp cottonwood. They are my all time favorite tree even though there a dirty tree. There not the worse of the worse how ever there better than Lombardy poplar,Box Elder,Sumac. Cottonwood trees are soft wooded trees the wood is used for card board boxes and crates and pallets the wood tends to warp. Cottonwood trees can live 60-70 years sometimes 125-200 years if they have right conditions and don't get struck from diseases. There are cotton-less cottonwoods available also. Cottonwoods make excellent shade trees that is one of the few great things about them there excellent fast growing shade trees. How ever be careful see how big your yard is before planting it. Just like its relative willow the roots love water and they will travel far for water cause damage to pipes and septic systems and get into house foundations Cottonwoods grow between 70 to 100 to 125 feet tall they need lots of room to grow because of there size. Make sure you have a large yard if you do plant it as far back as possible away from house to prevent damage. If your yard is to small find a place in the woods to plant it with other trees. If your yard is really big and you plant it make sure you water it regularly and prune die back that helps keep them healthy. Sometimes Cottonwoods are planted in parks as shade trees or really large back yards. They are the state tree of Nebraska and Kansas.

Actually a lot depends upon the variety of milkweed - tuberosa transplants very well as a young plant, but once it's established it really isn't happy about being moved. I've collected tuberosa for years, since there are so many wonderful color variations in the wild populations - but I hold my breath with every transplant. The big clumps are tempting, but you simply have to leave them alone. That said... I posted a note about seed pods of what I acquired several years ago as an 'annual' butterflyweed. It will overwinter and can get huge - so I'd consider it a tender perennial, possibly asclepia curassivica. I'd be happy to share pods with anyone interested in trying them in their butterfly garden.

Sorry I can't help you identify them but there is a wonderful website with lots of pictures and descriptions if you want to go poke around you may be able to determine which it is. Here's the link. http://karcheskycanna.com/ There are other great sites out there too but that one has the most different ones I believe. Those are your seedpods and they will swell up really big and eventually crack so you can see the seeds. When this happens take the seeds out. They will be big, black hard seeds and you will have to use a nail clipper or nail file to make a nick in them. I use an emery board and just file down one side until I see white, after that you can put them in a glass of warm water and in a few days you will see a white sprout. When they sprout you can plant them either in the ground or a pot. I've also read that some people just plant the seeds without all the prepration and they sprout but it takes a long time. You could try planting it at an angle to bring it to plumb but part of the root ball would probably be above ground which would be an obstacle you may not be able to overcome. Another solution is to plant it at the same angle it was originally and try to bend it back to vertical through the use of stakes and ropes (not all at once). How high do you want it grow? I'd pick a height to chop at (do it in early spring or after it goes dormant) and cut them all off if you choose to. It has been a great while since I bought my P.G. but I know at about 3 to 5 feet is where I'd cut all the branches off and keep the height about there. I don't know what the nursery business did to get this original trunk but I have a feeling they chose more than one limb to create the trunk. Over time they seem to merge together. I took some cuttings of my old P.G. from our last home (the original died after being shaded out by trees) and kept those few cuttings in a gallon glazed pot for a few years - maybe ten. I finally put that pot of "bonsai" cuttings in the ground and it grew to about six to seven feet tall. I kind of neglected it so it became overwhelming in size but the blooms suffered for all this growth. I am trying to rectify that problem starting this early summer by hedging it back to a more formal shape in hopes of blooms this year or at least next that matched what it once was so long ago. Thanks, gene. I didn't even think about it being a seedling and not turning into a good little fig tree like its mama. Good point. I will also try a sucker, can't hurt.

Peg, thanks, I know I am very spoiled. It's like living in the garden of eden because everything grows, but of course, we pay dearly for it out of our pocketbook, but it's worth it. This fig tree grows like a weed. I prune it back severly after the leaves fall in the winter and then it comes back with a vegence in the spring, growing, growing, growing and producing more figs than we can handle. I try to eat them, give them to friends, family and strangers, and still a good bit of them go into my compost. Oh, and I do make jars upon jars of fig preserves too. I will definately always have a fig tree wherever I live from now on, they are just so easy and tempting.

But my kids find the best part the low branches, perfect for preschoolers to climb up in. :)

You have a beautiful tree. Try pruning after you pick the last fruit rather than to slow down growth.

Another option for your suckers and/or seedling is to wait until they go dormant to dig them up. Wrap the bare roots in damp paper towel then in plastic or foil. Store in a cool (40F) dark area until spring then plant or pot as usual. If you don't eat, the fridge works great, however I think not feeding preschoolers is frowned upon.
