Dottato should ripen in your coastal climate? Where did you hear that they wouldn't? I know of some that ripen in areas that get the same heat mainly as you do during the summer, but get wreched winters. 80's is prime temps for most figs to ripen, when you start getting into the mid 90's they will go to sleep, almost a dormant rest, they won't loose leaves, but they will stop growing alot of times. so if you get 80's you should be fine with them. Where did your grandmother have her tree? If you feel you can't ripen these figs in your climate, try making a small greenhouse just enough to house this particular tree. You can easily make one with heavy plastic and set it up where it will get warmer for just this tree, but don't make it too hot or you will get bad result. Also, check out your sun issue. Leon, The leaves match very closely as well, although it's harder to judge since there is a good deal more variability in leaves than in figs even on a single tree. I'll make a comparison of the leaves of the Dotatto variants. As Sergio stated earlier, the figs of Dotatto vary also, depending on the date of the crop and climate conditions. The figs from the more mature limbs of my Dotatto variants tend to be larger and more spherical. Chris was the donor of WTE to Davis Germplasm. Chris was the source of my WTE as well. I believe he obtained it along with some other varieties from a now defunct nursery (not Aldrich's) in central Texas. It has been several months since Chris and I communicated. We never discussed the similarity between WTE and Kadota. In an old post I made on the Fig Forum a couple of years ago, before I was able to see and taste Kadota and WTE side by side, I listed them as my two sweetest figs. When I taste-tested the figs two days ago, (rinsing my mouth with water between figs), I found the taste and sweetness of WTE, Kadota-Lowes, Banana, Binella and Kadota-HD virtually identical. Kadota-Lowes,WTE,and Banana were a tiny bit sweeter than Binella and Kadota-HD because Kadota-Lowes, WTE and Banana were in-ground trees rather than potted, and not watered as frequently. With all of the rain, the difference was negligible. Chris did opine to me once that he thought that quite a number of his differently named varieties were duplicates of each other. I'll ask him specifically what his opinion is regarding WTE and Kadota.

I have both Alma (2 sources) and Kadota (4 sources) in my collection. Although both Kadota and Alma (particularly Kadota) can vary in appearance depending on climate, my vote in this case goes for Alma, based on the subtle rosy shading on the skin and the dark brown color of the pulp. The skin on ripe Kadota figs ranges from green in cooler, rainy climates to yellow in hot, dry climates. However, my Kadotas do not have the rosy blush of the Alma figs. The pulp of Kadota figs is also tan, but usually not quite as dark as the pulp in the pictures.

Hi Loslunas:I have to apology to everybody about that i was claiming that Black Marseilles(Marseilles VS black)is Resistant to Fig Mosaic Virus. Your Mareilles VS Black is Positivelly infected with Fig mosaic Virus. I can see it is the same cultivar,But here in my collection ,i never ever seen any sign of fig Mosaic. I wonder if it will be just as prollific as in my Bacyard. I have a hint your fig has the UC Davis Strain of FM.If you got it from the east coast that is evidence that it got it from growing next to a U C Davis cutting and so it is contagious,here on east coast too.We all more or less are ordering for free from UCDAVIS,but i never noticed it spreading from one tree to other in my climate. Please tell me only if you got it on east coast or on west coast.I do not want to know where exactly you got your fig,just what side of the US. This is important to me because i Spreaded this fig Around,and Bragged how good it is. Take Care
