preparing for winter in zone 5

I planted a fig tree in a container this spring. It's doing nicely, although lately it has has some yellowing and dying off of the lower leaves. I called Cornell cooperative extension, they said the yellowing was probably lack of nitrogen.

My questions:

is it too late in the year to fertilize?

What is the best way to overwinter? Since it's in a pot, I could bring it in my garage or basement. The garage is not attached to the house, so it will get very cold here in Buffalo NY. But, will my basement be cool enough?
