mislabeled Ginkgo biloba probably 'Tubiformis'?

I purchased this Ginkgo biloba last winter from a local nursery. It was labeled 'Chris' Dwarf'. It has an dense,upright shrubby habit with numerous fastigiate branches. Once the leaves appeared, I realized it probably wasn't 'Chris' Dwarf'. The leaves roll into funnels/tubes and look as what I've seen in photos of 'Tubiformis'. The leaves are also larger than those seen on 'Chris Dwarf'. Does 'Tubiformis' have a multi stemmed, shrubby appearance?Any opinions?

This is a strange one, it's not a 'Tubifolia'.
A true 'Tubifolia' does have real "tube" leaves without a beginning and an end.
The leaves of this one are rolled.

For sure it's not a 'Chris' Dwarf' aka 'Munchkin' either...

I've seen plants like these twice, once labeled 'green bells' and he other time 'gollum's fingers' (not the Crassula). They were both handmade signs and the plants were for sale in San Francisco's Chinatown. I was into orchids not ginkgos at the time so I let them slide. Maybe they were just dehydrated?! ROFL!

Neither of the selections ('Tubiformis', 'Jade Butterflies') can be expected to achieve the size of a regular ginkgo - 'Tubiformis' is typically described as semi-dwarf or of a compact habit and 'Jade Butterflies' is considered a dwarf form. IME, the foliage on 'Tubiformis' doesn't revert but it IS variable. Juvenile foliage will most often be curved and tubular in form but adult foliage that looks like a standard ginkgo can also be present. And both are very slow growers, as is common with most ginkgos.

I actually don't know this cultivar, I read your post as saying they were both supposed to look like the first plant with the narrower lobes and was saying how it could happen that the other one didn't look like anything special. Since they both look somewhat aberrant you probably have two named cultivars there - are they both clearly grafted? Mislabeling is not unusual at nurseries. All it takes is a mistake at some point in the process from propagation to final sale.

I have a few more good ones here: Picea pungens 'RM 203' Jerry Morris Red Mountain, Colorado. A place where many brooms were found, evidently. Picea pungens 'Edit' "aka 'Edith' -- written as exactly from Porterhowse Nursery Availability. I'm sticking to 'Edit' sorry guys -- Don Howse is just one of those special people like Edwin/coniferjoy is. He's an American Authority as is Bob Fincham and when Bob tells me he had lunch with Dr. Barabit and that Edit was his wife's name and that the plant was named by Dr. Barabit for his wife, I'm going to have to go with Bob on this one all the way. Steve, So many questions and so early in the morning. You have high expectations for me. 'Buddy' - I found this broom in Wadsworth Ohio (my home town) It's a spur broom, meaning that it formed on a spur off the the main trunk of the tree. Seems to be stable for the most part. 'Joe's Broom' - found by Joe's Stupka. Source of 'Todd' and probably several other selections. Fairly stable. 'Majestic Butterflies' - variegated sport of 'Jade Butterflies'. Don't know how stable it is. 'Sunstream' - Variegation appears as yellow banding. I believe this is the same plant as 'Rainbow' 'Bonte Sport Holub' - do not know this one. 'Buchholz Variegata' - a selection of 'Variegata' by Talon Buchholz. Seems to have a bit better coloration and more stable. 'Vanilla Swirls' - do not know this one. 'Jerry Verkade' - Nicely yellow variegated selection and I have found it to be stable. Variegation will appear in large areas of a leaf often entire side will be colored. If it is green it has probably reverted. The problem with most variegated selections is that they are prone to revert. I kind of feel that as long as the plant is kept somewhat stressed the variegation will be prevalent and once established the color will start to revert to green. As long as cuttings are taken the plant will continue to color up. This is just a theory and may not truly be the case. Bill

Before everyone goes crazy trying to find the correct cultivar it is possible that it came from a Tubiformis graft. The leaf says Tubiformis but the branching does not. If when propagated one of the scions possessed a slight difference then you could end up with the varied form shown in the picture. Many Ginkgos have unstable traits. Regardless this is a beautiful form and I would bet most of us would love to have one just like it.

No, it doesn't because a true 'TUBIFOLIA' (not 'Tubiformis') does have real "tube" leaves without a beginning and an end.

That's what a circle is...infinity. On a 'Tubifolia' the leaves are fused at the base into a circle, or cone. The leaves on the Ginkgo in the photo are furled but not joined.

The wood is a slightly contorted indeed, but the "rolled" leaves doesn't fit for this cultivar...

I was searching for some information about Ginkgo biloba 'Tubiformis' and ran across this post. While I'm late to the party, I thought I'd go ahead and respond with some photos of my plant, as per a request in this thread.

This is a young plant in a #1 pot, about 2.5ft tall.

Thx Matt, good photos! You captured the tubular shape of the leaves. This plant is correctly styled 'Tubifolia' rather than 'Tubiformis'.
