Photos of your butterfly bushes?

I had to move some roses away from my back fence since theyve been doing poorly there. I do have 2 butterfly bushes doing well in that area, 1 i think is lavender eyes and the other is adonis blue. I think i have room for 2 more, And id love to see yours or hear about your favorite variety! I was considering honeycomb and pink delight since i have purple. But i also like black night. I forgot i also have miss ruby, a beautiful raspberry colored one. Not planted yet though. Tell me about yours! :)

Lily, thanks for starting this thread. I have one ... I think it may be Twilight. I recently did some heavy pruning on it to see if I'd get a second flush of growth. I'm not crazy about the flower color. It seems to get lost in the green backdrop of Mexican bush sage. Plan to dig it up and transplant elsewhere in the spring

I'd love to see a Nanho Blue and hear experiences with its growth. Is it really dwarf, or is that just in colder zones?

I will get out and snap pics later. I know I have 'Black Knight' in the butterfly garden although the flowers never seem quite as dark as they appear in the catalogs - it is always blooming in such hot direct sun, it seems to deepen toward the end of the season. That one is perhaps as tall as me - 66" or so.

And then I have a very large white - it is tall well over my head at 7' I'd say I believe it is 'White Profusion'.

I know for sure I bought 'Nanjo Blue' and for a time and it was lower growing although it seemed to get very wide and the flowers weren't very bright - I thought I transplanted it out to my island bed and that one is blue but it gets much taller now. Maybe I replaced it and forgot...

The one that interests me a lot is 'Dartmoor' that gets clusters of flowers - I wonder if they all age at the same rate?

This site shows the English Butterfly series that really are supposed to be compact. 'Peacock' looks very nice.

And how about those variagated ones like 'Santana' - although it gets quite tall.

I did have 'Honeycomb' at one time - it just never thrived for me like the others, may have been the location.

Four of my five did survive the winter but all died back to the ground. I thought they were dead, but patience paid off and they sent up new growth from the roots. Now with some rain and heat they are catching up and are all between 3-4'. They normally get to be 6-8' by the end of the season when I cut them back to 1-2' in the spring (when the woody part didn't die back.) Don't know the variety since I started them from seed . They all have that light lavender colored flowers. I think they will bloom fine with the rate they are growing now. Store bought butterfly bush never lasted more than a year or two for me, but the seed grown ones are still going strong. The winter sure was hard on things though. My trumpet creeper that normally completely covers and drapes down from our our large willow tree snag that is 15-20' tall has died all the way back the ground. There is just a few feet of growth at the base and it looks pretty sad.

I've had a ton of trouble with 'Lo & Behold Blue Chip' plants...especially in containers! Last year...I left them in their original container...died! Planted it in another container...died! Sun or no sun didn't matter. I bought another one this year & planted it in my flower bed & amended the soil so it wouldn't be too wet & it was doing fine until the house painters stepped on it! Now it is half dead! Good news is if it does die again...I bought it from a local nursery that has a 1 year guarantee! My MIL has had good luck with potted BF bushes but she has her's on a drip auto irrigation system! One of her's looked like it got rust but is now doing better! I've had a hard time here with them anywhere except in the ground! Don't know if this helps...but good luck! Lila

Sorry Lilyfinch, I don't have any pictures, but my mom has the Black Knight and it is a very dark purple.

I got a bunch of butterfly bushes on clearance because they were advertised at the store as "Pink Delight". I guess nobody wanted pink because they were there all spring and finally got so big in the pots, they started to bud out. Well, they were purple, not pink, so I bought about a dozen! LOL They're a very nice medium purple, but I have no idea what they're really called.

I'm still trying to figure out how to post pictures (I tried to post a picture of the horses, but it wouldn't work.) Can you post a picture of the raspberry colored butterfly bush...that sounds pretty :)

I have a Butterfly bush called "Royal Red" of course it isn't really red at all but more of a purple colored. It is only in its second year and wow it is growing like crazy and is big. It has been covered with butterflies this summer and the hummers like it too. Here is a picture so you can see the color of the blooms

I have an older white one in the orchard, and the purple is up near the courtyard and is probably around 4yrs.old.

Oh, I like the yellow. I had one for two years, then it disappeared. I'm not even sure they sell them around my area anymore, perhaps they found out that variety wasn't winter hardy.

I'm back - snapped some pics while out for a very hot walk - these pics look about as misty moisty as the humidity hanging in the air!

'White Profusion'

Kindof a bad photo but this is the I thought was the blue - but it's awfully tall, about 5'. It looks misty in this photo but it rather looks like way giving a subtle backdrop with the cleome.

This is the one I am quite sure I bought as 'Black Knight' for the butterfly garden but it doesn't look like it does it? I still like it there - gives height and substance and it really does drip with butterflies during the day.

Wow everyone! Thanks for the pictures so much! I have had trouble myself with transplanting them and as soon as i plant a BB it wilts and has to regrow leaves all over again. Not sure why... I lost a royal red and multicolored on that way accidentally. I wish i could post a pic of my miss ruby, but it has gotten weedwacked down by a well meaning dh! lol hes dangerous with that thing.
The white profusion one looks so whispy and pretty! And i like that Guenivive, tho im sure ive never seen that kind localy. I like the large panicles of flowers. i also love the scent! I ll be looking around at some garden centers for a winner!
