same fig variety tasting different

i gave my father a violette de bordeaux fig that i grew from a cutting from a plant that i have, and has always tasted wonderfully. he has tasted my fig and loved it which is why i grew the plant for him.

he has a decent crop of figs just turning ripe, and he said the first couple he tasted were not sweet at all.

Is this normal for the same variety to have such different taste? He did wait until the figs were very plump and squishy to the touch. Do certain conditions cause different taste?
