My research about fig culture in Thailand, tropical country.

My reseach about fig culture. I founded fig tree can growth and give high volume of fruit all year. My field station is plainful area not far away of Bangkok, capital of Thailand. Average temperature all year is 30-36 degree celsius. It very hot no frost in winter. My fig not dormant can grow and give fruit all year.....but in rainy season we have problem about leaf rust. It make leat drop and give poor quatily fruits . Also I treated it for fruit set only in winter and summer my fruit is very good quality. Some time my sweet ot fresh fruit is up to 20 brix.

My fig that started form layering(height 30 cm.) can give me fruit more than 200 fruit/tree in 1 year( up 2,000 in 4 year)

Now I want to collect fig cultivar more. My garden is mini tropical botanical garden. We have rare palm, rare fruit tree, tropical tree and flower that collect from around Thailand and near country.. I want to exchange my plant with your fig tree and need your sugestion too.

I will give you anything you want and i have and you do not, just sent me an email, and tell you wish.

Thailand, has the best collection of tropical fruits. I'm not sure how well would Ficus Carica do for you.
I would love to trade with you, unfortunatly, plants can not be shipped into the US with out proper permits.

Yes, my country have a lot of best tropical fruits. Some fruits(or propagating part) can export worldwide and some fruits can't not(out of law) . I ever (import) order seeds or plant to my country. If I order small packets them sent to me via airmail postage. Seeds are sent in plain brown or white padded bags as Airmail Letters.
Them unable to provide phytosanitary certificates or other declarations.
But If large order Phytosanitary certifigates needed...........I guess in your hometown be same. I ever sent my seeds to my friend and I can find goverment unit that special work for Phyto free garantee.

Fruitnut: I applaud your efforts, at worst you may be eccentric, who cares, at best, ahead of the curve. All of us should be aiming for what works best in our area as you well know. Speaking from experience, greenhouse and high tunnel culture are worlds vastly apart from outdoor culture, each have their own set of challenges and benefits. Probably the biggest set of challenges, depending on the regional climate, for the beginner is the relative lack of information on growing under cover when it comes to fruits. Being an atypical beginner to outdoor fruit culture, it is wonderful to have access to so much information ranging from published refereed journal research to gardening magazine articles. Though the learning curve is steep, at least there are many good footholds to use to climb the hill and many hands held out to help. I suspect trying to find labeled pesticides for fruit crops under plastic is pretty challenging also. Just curious what your water quality is like and soils as the 2 can lead to problems with salt accumulations over time depending on the water quality, soil type and irrigation practices. Like many, our little postage stamp sized horticultural enterprise could definitely use more land, there is none available. Both my wife and I would love to put up a high tunnel for extended vegetable production but we lack the means. It is quite unfortunate as I easily have the expertise to erect and maintain a high tunnel and farm under plastic. I just remembered a benefit you may not have ever mentioned to growing under plastic, you don't have to wear sunscreen to avoid sunburn! Darned it, now I really wish I had a high tunnel!

Also if is not my problem (I live in Italy Z9b),I'm looking for solutions for fig problem on cold. Normally Stem and branches of well hardened fig' wood support up to -15Â°C (5Â°F), Normally in cold regions instead the wood may be not well hardened and too much watered (herbaceous wood). Heat and less watering in late summer aid the hardening. The roots are quite less cold resistant because in nature are protected by the soil. In ground (in natural ambient) at the deep of one foot the temp may be normally over the freezing. For so: temp have to be in a range of from 25Â°F up to 40Â°F, insulation may have sense in the surface of contact to the paving, if the paving is frost; other insulations have no sense because in a room slowly all the temperatures become levelled. Insulation have sense only in case of localized active heating. As signaled is very dangerous raising of temp for long time and lot over 40Â°F, for this may be utile, open the garage or put outside the tree. May be utile for you use a Min-Max termometer to know the evolution of temp in your garage, of if you use localized heating (and so protections) inside the protections. The history of the U.S. is rife with imported diseases and insects, and as elder states, some well intentioned and purposely done. Seem any honeybees lately? Better look quickly, because they're about to become history, also. This is easy enough to google, but if memory serves me, the imported trachael mites and body mites that are decimating our honey bee population came from an apiary supply in Florida, who sent imported, undocumented Queens (bees) to various areas in the U.S.--thus spreading the newly-imported pests nationwide. Beekeepers now, must medicate ALL bess (so much for honey being "natural", anymore) in their hives, and many are still weakened by the mites and can't make it through Winter. I have a beekeeper friend who loses half of his 20 hives, annually, (over Winter) because of the mites Honeybees are noticeable, also, by their absence, everywhere in my area. Of course, this is a MINUTE example, of the thousands of breaches that occur annually, and allow unwanted species and pests and diseases to enter the country (for those still wondering why concerned authorities are a little "jumpy" about such things). elder: How about mojo?

Thera, Bass raises some good questions in his follow-up, perhaps you could clarify even more: where did you acquire the cutting from which you started your fig tree, and is it actually Ficus carica, or some species of tropical fig? If it is Fica carica, do you know the variety?.....Elder

Sure, my fig is Ficus carica. Now we have Brown turkey, Conadria, Black Jack, Black Mission, Kadota, King, White Genoa,Verte, Alma, Dauphine, Advance selection from seedling of Kadota, Brown Turkey, unname from Taiwan, Italy, Japan
For Osborn I think is not collect labelled.
I buy cutting from my friend whos the owner of tropical tree nursery in my hometown, some variety gived from my friend whos be a tourist by seed or cutting. Now we have Royal Project(Supporting by King) worked research about this plant in high moutain, north of Thailand.
Old believe we trust fig can only planting in cool area(such as high moutain of my tropical country), but now from my(and other resercher) worked break this believe. Figs can planting in hot plainful area and give high quality fruit with good care.

UNLESS one is a BIG TIME (high volume!) exporter/importer
of (ANY) live plant; it is NOT worth the effort/expense/time
(red-tape) involved going legally through the USDA stuff...

Also heard that there some new rules about importing any
'SmallSeedLots' into the USA! In a way, I feel
they may be right. No one should be responsable to
intoduce 'noxoius' weeds or insects (like the Asian
mosquito that is constanly 'bugging' me like hell!)...

Thera, Thank you for your input concerning your varieties, and the fact that they do NOT need dormancy as a requirement for fruit production. I hope this lays to rest that myth once and for ever.
As to helping you with additional cuttings, I'm sure we would all like to help, but we also want to comply with our country's regulations. If you might have a contact over here who has the knowledge and knows the channels to use, many of us would be eager to assist in your acquisition of additional varieties. Let us know.....Elder

Thank Elder and everybody. I grower fig, flower and all tree by love and want to promote my health(and my family) not for commercial or business. I'm salary man. My work is serious and hard, make me alway sick...... When I started this hobby make me relax. I like in flavor and nutrition of fig. I loved in plant breeding. My final goal before retired(or gone to anywhere without our world...) is create best new variety of this plant that optimize for local land.....My tropical rain country have a many insect, disease make difficult comercial planting. Can grower for only in home garden

Wow! Great slide show! I for one am inspired! The espalier training was very interesting. This along with the earlier Japanese website has given me the inspiration to begin training some of my figs next year! Yadda out.

Hi, I was looking at your pictures and you have a wonderful collection. It looks like you are very good at growing more trees :). I am wondering if you train certain cultivars differently for a reason? I am interested in training some of mine in a similar fashion and wondered if one cultivar was as good as the next to bend or grow upright. 3jsmom31 :)

Hello Thera, I have I have Italian White, Italian Honey, Early Violet, Candy Stripe, Conadria, Violet from Bordeaux, Black Marseilles, Celeste, Italian Black, Alma, Purple, Sierra, Black Mission, Lattarula, Kadota, Magnolia, Brown Turkey, Neveralla, Pasquale and Green Ischia fig cultivars.

I live very close to Thailand and if you can send half a dozen healthy bulbs of Pueraria Mirifica, I'll exchange with half a dozen cuttings of the cultivar of your choice.
