Need some Fig Growing Advice in San Diego

Hi All,

In Aug 08, we moved from Charleston, SC to San Diego to a house with a mature black mission fig tree. Arrived just as the figs came in. Good crop of thumb sized or slightly larger figs that ripened nicely and evenly across the fruit. Just perfect, succulent and sweet. Fed the tree composte with a little manure mixed in in Feb based on input from a neighbor that has been next door 40years. Water 10min twice weekly. Trimmed the tree back about 10% (it was neglected by the previous owner). This year, we have a massive crop and the figs are HUGE. Couple of problems: By the time the top of the fig gets ripe, the bottom is starting to rot. This years figs are very Very seedy compared to last year. I'm new to fig farming and could really use some advice to get back to the smaller fig or to the ones that ripen easily, take care of the tree, ect. Also, how can we tell when these figs are just right for picking?
