Once they sprout do you move them in full sun?
Comments (4)My jugs sit on the west side of the house. They get sun most of the afternoon into the evening (when the sun does decided to make an appearance, that is). This past Sunday the temps got up to 84, and I was stuck at work until 3pm. It was supposed to be mostly cloudy, but as luck has it, the sun came out all day. I was so worried my sprouts were going to fry. As soon as I got home I moved all of the jugs that sprouted into the shade, the rest remained where I had them. The sprouts were fine, I didn't lose any, and some of the jugs I've been waiting for to sprout have started to sprout. I didn't want to remove the tops because we're still in for some cold days, and if we get a heavy rain I don't want the rain to pummel the babies, so I'll take off the tops when the sprouts have gotten to a good size and/or we get some consistent warm days. Comments (14)I have a couple types of Foxglove growing in my hummingbird bed, including Digitalis purpurea and grandiflora. I love Foxglove and the hummers nectar at it sometimes, although it doesn't seem to be their favorite plants. The hummingbird's favorite 3 plants that I grow are - Monarda didyma (red bee balm) - Lobelia cardinalis - Yvonne's Salvia - which is a tall cultivar of Salvia splendens Also growing Ipomoea sloteri/Cardinal climber which is a very vigorous annual vine with red tubular flowers that will cover a trellis pretty quickly and the hummers love it. Other plants I'm growing this year that the hummers like are Salvia coccinea - 'Lady in Red' and 'Coral nymph'. They will sometimes nectar from other assorted flowers, like Cleome, Phlox, Buddleia, Dicentra, Columbine, Heucheras, Hosta, etc....See MoreDo you hang your feeder in the sun or shade?
Comments (15)I live in Vancouver,WA and I am new to hummers etc. I placed my feeder on the hook up on the patio and I have nothing but shade . I have YET to see a hummer visit that feeder.. feeling really blue as I was so looking forward to the hummingbirds..I have no red/yellow flowers on my patio as it is small (we live in an apartment) Any idea what I have done wrong or is it not the right time to be putting out the feeder?...See MorePut tumbler in shade or sun?
Comments (5)Where your composter is located, sun or shade, does not make any difference. Any heat generated as the material is digested is from microbial activity, not solar energy. I have not seen any research to support those that sell "solar composters" other than the fantastic claims they make about them. One manufacturer of tumbler composters says you can make compost in theirs in 14 days and makes no mention of needing sunlight while another manufacturer of a "solar composter", costing much more money, says you need their special design to make compost in 14 days. I would find a good place for the composter, near both the source of material and where the compost will be used, and put it there. kimmq is kimmsr...See Morelibbyshome
