I dont think its too late. I actually tore out about 20 squash plants yesterday because they dying from bug attacks on the stems. I replanted a packet of Zucchini on July 23 and got about 18+ seedlings out of that packet so far. I re-tilled the unsuccesful first attempt bed and transplanted the new zukes there. Hoping for the best. Also planted a pack of string beans and cukes on July 23. The beans are already 4 inches+ in heights and leafing out nicely. Got a whole bunch of cuke seedling too that i have to spread out in various spots. Im being optomistic in these three veggies cause they are fast growers.

We are in a very cold zone 6. I still can't figure out why it's not classified as a zone 5. two winters back it got down to as low as minus 11 degrees Fahrenheit. I have only been testing for cold hardy figs for about five years. So, I'm not the greatest expert. But, what we came up with for our very cold zone 6 is: Hardy Chicago. Cold hardy but sensitive to late spring frost. From talking to experts on figs 4 fun site, we planted last year, Marseille Black VS, Top rated for being cold hardy and reliable. Sal's (EL) strain, Sal's has been tesed in our area for about 10 to 15 years, by another fig tester. We, also planted outside others that are suppose to be cold hardy. But the three I mention are know to be cold hardy and taste good. English Brown Turkey is suppose to be even more cold hardy then the first three. But, finding the right strain that also taste good is difficult. The most cold hardy of the English Brown Turkey figs that we could find, is a fig called LaRadek's Englsih Brown Turkey. It is suppose to have taken minus 18 degrees Fahrenheit in Europe. We are attempting to bring it into the country with the help of Edible Landscaping in Virgina. There are other cold hardy figs that I think might work for you. Since you are going to cover it for winter protection. But, I would suggest buying only from members of the Figs 4 Fun site. Most figs sold from a lot of nurseries are mis-labled. If you follow the posting on Figs 4 Fun, it will give you a lot of information and a better idea of who to buy from and who to avoid. You will also see posters growing figs in Canada as well. So growing figs in a Zone 5 is possible Bob

Yor fig Need Thinning,and trimming in the Spring only. This year is unusual bad for figs here in New Jersey. So you can't get a conclusion about your fig looking of this year. One Other thing you can do,if you want ripe main crop: Brake off the breba,crop as soon as they appear. No fig will produce 2 full crops in New Jersey. The hot season is not enough long. Do you know which species you have? Is it seed pods you want, or just flowers? I have several bush Allamanda which in some places is listed as A. cathartica and in others A. schotti, but my leaves look different than yours. Mine have been in the ground for two and a half years and are now blooming their heads off, so I'll share my conditions even though I don't know if yours would like the same. I haven't pruned them, have never fertilized them (although the soil was amended when I planted them because it is very poor and limestoney), but mine seem to bloom most with more heat and more water. It's been in the mid-90s since late April here (doesn't usually get that hot until well into July), which is when mine started to bloom heavily (mine bloom year round, but more sparingly in the winter). Then, last month, the rain started and now my plants look like they have more flowers than leaves. They are in full sun, along a wall with southern exposure. If my plants are any indication of what conditions bush allamandas bloom most in, I'm going to guess that your plants are either not getting enough water, not getting enough heat/sun, or you are fertilizing them too much. I hope you figure it out! If it's any consolation, mine would constantly dry out and would hardly flower their first year. It just took mine a year for their roots to grow deep enough to get enough regular water, but now they're my biggest bloomers. Good luck!
