brookw, that's what I mean by conflating the terms. Astringent and bitter are two different things although perhaps often occurring together. I'd describe astringent as more of a feeling than a basic taste. It gives you the dry-mouth sensation. Unripe astringent persimmons are the classic example, but anything with tannins will produce that effect to some degree. Bitter, I'd describe as tasting poisonous. If you've tried lettuce that has bolted it is very bitter. Or grapefruit membrane. Grapefruit is also very tart which is distinct from bitterness. Tart or sour is the taste of acidity. Vinegar, lemon juice, and most fruit that isn't ripe are usually quite tart. The thing is, they are also often astringent as well so I can see how the two things get thought of together. Further complicating things are genetic differences in the ability to perceive flavors. For example, a substance that is very bitter to one person may be essentially tasteless to another. Also, common usage of a number of these terms have been muddled to be used as synonyms in some circumstances.

Ada, I would have faith in anything Sooner Plant Farm grows as long as their own info on their website indicates it is cold-hardy to zones 6 and 7. Even though Sooner Plant farm ships nationally, I believe they started out growing for the Oklahoma market and then branched out as word spread about the quality of their plants. I've never seen or heard one single complaint about their plants or their customer service and that is rare nowadays. Google and look for reviews and you'll see that they have only postitive ones, or at least they did the last time I checked on them. As for S.S.E., the yearbook is the best entertainment in town. Who needs movies or DVDs or TV shows or music when you can read endlessly about heirloom varieties. I don't graft and have no intention of learning. There's only so many hours in a day, and I am already overcommitted. The best source of knowledge I know with regards to grafting is Scott. Well, Randy probably grafts too, but I am not sure. If you really want to learn about grafting, post a request for grafting info on its own thread so people can see it in the subject box, and I am sure that any experienced grafters we have here will respond. I've toyed with the idea of grafting tomato plants onto Maxifort root stock to see if I get improved disease-resistance or more vigorous plants, but there again, it comes down to how many hours there are in a day (not enough of them). For several years I had grown Early Girl. Last year picked up seed called Early And Often and put a few next to the Early Girl. It's a 68 day tomato and the taste was very good, better than Early Girl. It's a pink tomato, 8 oz. I stopped in Lowes the other day and found they had seed out and got some. Last year the package showed the seed came from Thailand, this year it appears to be USA produced. Last fall I looked and couldn't find this seed in the Burpee catalog and wrote to them. The woman that answered also could not find it in their catalog. I wrote down everythin from the front and back of the pack to show that this was a Burpee product. She replied that she found it in a separate catalog. It seems that there is a seed series called Signature that is franchized to Lowes and so you can only get the seed there. I guess you cannot order it from Burpee. I find practically no mention of this tomato on the web. Is it entirely new? The plants did very well at my aunt's in Indianapolis, better than my garden in NJ. Probably more sun in Indy.
