Southern Living subscribers...coneflowers

In the July issue of SL, on page 60,there are new coneflowers being demonstrated, new colors, by someone we love very much, by the split-rail fence built by someone we also love very much in their cottage garden. Err ah, it's a family member. LOL.

Ok, so I reread the article again but you are gonna have to give me a hint. No mention in the article of who it is by the fence and coneflowers. Anxious for you to tell all.

I must chime in. I haven't had success with QV in zone 6 Pa, but if you are zone 7, and try in ground who knows? My effort was with a 5 footer I brought back from Florida. It was not use to anything cooler than zone 8B, so it was probably doomed from the start. Acorns I tried were all duds from ebay, not a one of them sprouted. You may have a shot in zone 7. I am trying Quercus Fusiformis now, it is zone 6 hardy, it survived 2 months of last winter. I hadn't purchased it until Jan or Feb 2011. It took a while to get leaves this year but it may need some patience because it came from Arizona into my zone 6 yard midwinter. If you fail at QV try Q. Fusiformis. It is slightly shorter than QV until very old but stretches out like southern live eventually. The bad thing about live oaks is if you get lots of snow and the weight on branches. Shingle oak leaves are lance shaped but bigger and Willow oak has skinny lance shaped but longer leaves than QV. The Shingle and Willow oaks are fully hardy and deciduous oaks. I can relate about Q V being special and wanting one in your yard, when you see them down south in their element they are like no other tree. I had heard that there is one in Central park, NYC but it may be the hardier Q Fusiformis. I think someone posted that on this site but not sure. Anyhoo, I would try it if I were in zone 7 for sure, I may still try again here with more northern acorns in a sheltered spot.One discouraging thing though is that on the web site of champion trees for each state has no champion QV trees north of coastal Virginia. Even coastal Pa doesn't have any listed. Temps are warmer now than decades ago when the champs would have been planted though, so who knows. If I hit the lottery for millions I would build a giant green house just so I could have a southern live oak, yes I'm a bit nutty about trees, they have one of those in Germany for a special tree but I can't remember the details, wish I could, I saw it years ago on the web.

We have lower cabinets extending along the back kitchen wall and floating shelves above on either side of the window. We use those for our everyday dishes. There’s plenty of lower cabinet space in both kitchen areas. One other thing we did was to make the closet in the dining area a storage area for our extra dinner ware etc. I LOVE all the light provided by the kitchen windows. Great trade off for cabinets.

Agree with the recommendations to consult an architect….. A). Love the house plan, but really dislike the “weird/small” kitchen, especially in renderings in which the cooktop is sitting in the middle of the kitchen with a metal exhaust pipe going through the ceiling. For me, it completely ruins the entire look of the house…. B). I also agree with the Vaulted Ceiling Comments. I once built a house by a well-known designer/architect that had a completely open 2nd Floor (in several locations)— It was a gorgeous house, but was a monster to heat and cool and I would never do that again. Nine-ten foot ceilings are fine for me…. C). Final Considerations—- Depending on the version, Tideland Haven has a relatively sizable footprint, but has very few “rooms.” For me— I’d expect a large food pantry, butlers pantry/china closet, food prep area and/or Grandkid’s FROG/Bunk-Room for 2400-2800 square feet of heated space…. D). Although it is technically “wasted” space, I do actually like the entry “Wow Factor” and could think of several ways to utilize that space….. E). Would love to see the creative solutions that others have found with this plan since it has so much potential. ❤️

That is our DIL. She is doing some perennials with Southern Living and there is going to be more on the perennials she is growing. I think there will be more either in the fall or spring. I cannot remember. I am sure she told me, but cannot recall if she said. It will be kind of an ongoing thing with perennials she has been testing for SL. LOL. Thank you for looking.

Oh, how fun!! I noticed that article when I received my copy of the magazine...and (blush) immediately went out and spent my lunch money on a couple of new coneflowers.

Oh how nice!!! I get the magazine and read the article but it is even nicer now that it is someone I "know"!!!! You have a beautiful DIL!!! My coneflowers are blooming now and they are always a favorite because the butterflies are all over them!

Very nice! I'd be interested in knowing her success. I've had a lot of problems with some of Saul's new cone flowers in my own garden and in our church garden. We love them, but they don't stay for long. Wondering what the trick is!

GGG, she has built her soil. I have sort of helped her through that process. Since she and son are younger, more physically able, they scrounge for cottongin trash, use alfalfa meal, get horse and rabbit manure, leaves which they shred, invest in some mushroom compost just as a top dressing, and we gave her a nice pH meter a couple years ago. Son does the "heavy lifting" and she is learning about soil and how different plants work in her soil. I think her coneflowers are in sightly raised beds.

So funny you posted this... I finally had time last night to crack open the July issue and that article was what I turned to first. I will go back tonight and re-read it and study the pics closer. I think all coneflowers may be my favorite flowering perennial this year, due to their "no" maintenance, drought tolerance, butterfly and bee attraction, and the fact that they reseed to make babies. Last year I planted some of the newer varieties like Harvest Moon and Sundown and I think they are beautiful !! They grew sturdy, strong stems and have tons of beautiful, long lasting flowers. I couldn't be mnore pleased with them. Will the new varieties make babies too ? I have 2 reseeded baby plants of Magnus that are about to flower, and I wish I had more so I could transplant them to other areas of the yard. I would love it if Sundown and Harvest Moon had babies. I will be looking forward to more articles from your DIL's garden !! Congrats :)

Ah ha! My soil is "ammended" but not like that, try as I may, it is hard for me to find that many organics (that my DH will tote, at least).

Those coneflowers are gorgeous! I think I need to branch out and try some of those new varieties. I've had purple coneflower for years and also love their no maintenance quality. They also last forever in bouquets!

One thing I've noticed is that butterflies rarely pay attention to them, which is a bit of a disappointment. I have other butterfly attracting flowers that they seem to prefer more than the coneflower.
