Another Coneflower question

From reading the post below about the plants still being small this time of the year, am I to assume the new plants I planted this year (which are pretty darn big and bushy) won't get that big next year until possibly mid to late summer, IF they re-seed?

I need to write this in my journal so I'll know to buy the plants again next year. lol. I really do love these and don't want to wait for them to get tall.

Mine have been up and blooming now for several weeks. It was a cooler spring than normal by only a couple degrees. It does depend on what you bought as to size and growth, but remember, those plants you purchased were grown under ideal conditions with lots of fertilizer. If you want plants that large, you have to provide the same.

But just so you know, the plants I purchased last year were about 2' tall. A few flowers have passed the 4' mark this year. Most are within the 3' range.

Thanks Token! I'll probably buy a few plants and see if this year's seeds come up next spring.

We're having an unusually hot summer, I'm surprised anything's alive. lol.

But I've fallen in love with the Coneflowers, along with Victoria Blue Salvia. It's thriving in this heat, and hopefull it too will come back next year. I'll still buy some plants of it also. :)

The orange colored echinaceas are hybrids that tend to be somewhat unstable - they seem not to grow or return true to form with consistent reliability. Personally, I like Tiki Torch and it has done well in my climate. A much more vigorous and easy to grow orange flowered plant is Tithonia rotundifolia, Mexican sunflower. It is an annual that is extremely fast from seed, will self-sow and hummingbirds love it. And it looks alot like an echinacea flower :-)

It's been years since i started echinacea from seed, but as i recall it needs some cold, and it wants dark to germinate, unlike most seeds (so make sure the seed is buried at least 1/4" deep). I don't know if that would apply to the hybrids or not. If it were me, i'd try wintersowing (containers, not direct). There's a whole forum on it, if you aren't familiar with how to do it. It's easy and it works great for many things that are hard to sprout otherwise. I know regular echinacea purpurea isn't that bad, seeing as how i always have seedlings coming up here and there from my original plants. As gorgeous as they are, i haven't had much luck with the crosses here.

Foxgloves are a biennial, but that does not mean you won't get foliage. What will happen is this, year one you plant the seed, they grow, but just produce foliage. The foliage dies back over winter. Year two, the foliage comes back, and the plant puts up a stalk that blooms. Usually after that the foliage dies for good. Now in my area, my foxgloves that were first year last year, did not come back. This means they died over winter, could be for a number of reasons, but I expect that it was just to cold for them here. If you have dead looking roots still, my instinct says that the plant is gone. Let the seeds ripen on the plant. We're still a ways away from that happening. I started collecting mine last year in late August. The goldfinches will let you know when they are ready. :) Then, wintersow them. 3" of dirt in a container with holes for drainage. Pat them into the soil. Cover with holes to allow for air and water entry. Wait til spring for new plants. Chances are they won't bloom the first year, so hopefully, your current plants will return. I just sowed seeds Janie sent me today. I should have plants large enough to overwinter by the first frost. They'll bloom next year.

I don't think you will have this problem with coneflowers. I got my collection as tiny half foot plants 2 years ago in a particular hot summer. This year, despite cool and rainy weather, they are reaching 3 1/2 ft and blooming. They do reseed so I've had to many volunteers which I need to give away now. In fact, I have so many large plants I have no choice but to reduce the size of some plants by fall.
