Latex oozing semi ripe figs

Hello,

This morning, I went fig harvesting. Got a (huge) Armenian,

6 Italain Honey, some short/long stem Black Marseilles,

an (EL) HC, Improved Celeste, and a Brunswick. All tasted

more or less same (~good). We had a ~60*F coldest summer

night this week with plenty of rain along..

What caught my eye, was that some ALMOST ripe figlets,

had many droplets of the (infamous) white latex oozing

out of their skin! At first, I thought that it was more

than two, but on my second round, I could only confirm

it on Sal's (EL) and Vista (Mission).

Has anybody noticed/experienced such a thing?

Hi Gerge,and I hope you are well:
Yes mine are oozing too.
I figure it ,it is because it has more rain than in it's natural climate(GRECE,Malta,Turkey,etc.).
The easy adaptable figs will ooze the harder to adapt,will split,and explode wide open,and completelly loose flavor.
This is my own observation and deduction.
By the way:I positivelly identified the Celeste Group.
1.The southern Celeste:Your tiny Celeste,(Short Neck)
2The universal Celeste(longer neck):UCDAVIS Celeste
The Blu Celeste,Very Longish blue colored, Celeste,Jon Has it and I,and probably you.
I had a ripe fig from your Tiny Celeste and UCD..Both has the same taste and flavor,but positivelly different shape.Best regards

I've noticed the latex oozing from several of mine the past couple of weeks. Don't recall the varieties.

I wish I could be so optimistic. I have driven and ridden scores of thousands of miles in SC's countryside for nearly a third-century and all the while with more than a casual interest in fruiting plants. This was all over the state with only a few exceptions. Added to the rural through-roads and side roads, of the past two years I have driven an intensive few thousand miles on small country roads and dirt roads. I also deal with rural people not rarely (regarding unrelated problems) and I talk to county agents or staff in several counties or regions. I see some muscadines and figs, some scattered pears, occasional blueberries and plums, and the rare apple (probably far more common in the mountains and higher piedmont). Pecans are pretty plentiful though, and very occasionally a chestnut is seen. I probably wouldn't notice scattered blackberries, but would see a row. I might miss a small plot of strawberries. Big rural yards often have their fruit bushes and trees in the wide front or side expanses where it is possible for me to see them. City people are more backyard oriented. Commercially I see peaches, pecans, muscadines, apples (upstate only),strawberries, blueberries, pecans, and even one chestnut grove and one kiwi vineyard. The evidence that these can be grown here is there for all to see. A few people make jelly from the ornamental jelly plam (Butia), many banana plants are grown for ornamentals but few for fruit, loquat fruit from the common ornamentals are eaten by some, as are ginkgo nuts. I could hardly miss Japanese persimmons when fruiting in the fall but these are so rarely seen I off hand can't remember a one but my own. And what could be easier and more trouble-free to grow? I have seen fruiting cold hardy citrus, but very few. They may however be far more common near the coast. I just don't see the interest directly. The only counter-argument that is starkly obvious is that thousands of fruit plants are sold each year by the various nurseries and some of them actually are appropriate and have a reasonable chance to live (muscadines, rabbiteye blueberries, figs, a few of the pear selections, a few plums, pecans including rarely a good selection, and blackberries). Most others are doomed. Doomed peaches probably kill a lot of potential later interest.

i have a fig tree that is 12 years old and we lost it this winter. It was huge and beared many many figs twice a year. I cried. We cut it back to the ground. It was south facing and 1 1/2 stories tall and very wide. Some of the stems I planted in our flower garden to see if they would take. I am thrilled that there are shoots coming from the base of the the fig tree we left. Seven that I have counted so far. They are little but growing. The fig tree was dead, Really, really dead. The branches just broke off and were black and the huge stumps were not producing any sap. This is the first time we cut the fig tree. The fig tree was given to us by people who are gone now and we can not replace them. This winter we had ice storms and it was so cold. We live in Maryland and we are not the only people who lost our fig trees. Our fig tree produced so many figs that I was giving them away. I will be more diligent in covering them with garden cover and leaves this winter even though they are true south facing and next to our house by our sun room. It will take many years to get to where they were.

Peg 919: Thanks so much for the information. This is the very first season that I've attempted to grow figs. As you can read in some earlier postings, I bought three fig trees which were already loaded with green, unripe figs. I have in total, close to four-dozen figs between the trees. One of the trees that I bought, has now, ... and only just over the last three or four days, ... started to ripen figs, and I was amazed at just how dramatically some of the green figs have changed in size and color, in such a short time. Like I said ...the figs changed overnight! The only figs that I have ever tasted over the years were either store-bought figs, both green, and black, or, figs that my generous neighbors shared with us. The store bought figs were always very sweet and tender, however, the backyard figs were a different story. I'm not a great fan of these lousy, hard, dry, and corky-textured figs ... which always taste like sappy latex. Not so with the "ATREANO" figs! Today, I picked and tasted some tree-ripened figs. They were full of thick, sugary juice, and nutty seeds. Sort of jammy-textured too, with a very soft, golden, tender skin. There was not an ant, on or in the fruit, and when picked, the figs almost fell into my hand they were so heavy. If this "ATREANO" variety survives the NYC area winters, I think I will be very happy growing this particular fig tree. It's NOTHING like the "backyard" figs I've tasted! Just another bonus ... not one bird has pecked any of the ripe-though-greenish figs yet. I read that the greenish-colored figs don't attract birds because they "think" that the fruit is still hard, and not yet sweet. I'm keeping my fingers crossed with this explanation ... birds ain't stupid ... but, I digress. I have tasted BRN. T ... and, it was OK, ditto, "LATTARULA", ... but, the taste of an "ATREANO" fig is, I think, far superior ... much sweeter, and jammier in texture, and no understated notes of "latex glove" either. I'm very happy with the way this variety has performed so far. It's a good grower, and a heavy croper too. Of course, the next few seasons will tell a more complete story, performance-wise that is, ... asuming the trees winter-over in my unheated shed without damage or excessive die-back. Spring of '08 will tell the story. I'll light a few candles, and pray for the best. St. Jude, are you listening?

So my story is that we didn't have room or enough sun in our original yard for a fig tree. We bought the lot behind us while we were galavanting around the world and had house the house rented out. We moved back in last year and are working on the edible landscaping. I do actually have two little trees in pots right now. We got 8 figs off the lsu gold. So far we've had one fig off the green ischia and it has 3 more to go. I plan to put these in the ground once we finish construction on the detached garage. If I get any more varieties I may have to keep them in pots. But they are a serious hassle to keep watered in this heat. I've had to water them twice a day sometimes. Hubby is thinking is thinking about get a live trap to reduce the population of the racoons a bit. My daughter counted 12 of them crossing the street a few weeks ago, one of which was a mama with 6 babies. I don't think bird netting would be effective against those pesky critters. We will need bird netting for the blueberry bushes. I saw three cardinals decimate one plant for their breakfast one day.

I've harvested half of the 50 figs on my unknown green. Today I picked 2 that oozed latex at the stem end. Very good and juicy. Best yet. This was following two nights in the 40's with lots of rain and only a high of 60 in the day. It is now back to the 80's, humid and muggy.

Thanks for the offer. I've taken a few pics but haven't loaded them on the computer yet. I'm no spring chicken so not wanting to mess things up and then not being able to untangle them I'm slow, making sure I understand what I'm doing one step at a time. (If that's possible!) I need a local teenager to wiz me thru this! Aah, old age!!!!

Yes, I have taken some pictures (same day) with my newly
(used) OLYMP.500.UZ camera. However I am having (serious
trouble), downloading the S/W that 'puts them pics on my PC'.
May be a while till I figure things out...

Fabulous camera. Software should have come with the camera, which provides the drivers, and then you can ignore the rest of the software if you aren't using "raw" mode". When you hook it up to the USB port, choose "take no action", and then just copy, rename or move them in your explorer window like any other file.

Here is a link to the software - oops, the whole site seems to be down right now. I am sure I have an extra CD is need be - I have had 5 of their digital cameras and can surely make you a copy.

Here is one picture of the Vista with some fresh white drops
of latex. BTW, the other fig with latex was HC (not Sal's).
The affected figlets had ~4 drops of latex mostly around the
middle and/or top. After a day it was almost invisible.
Today after harvesting a Vista and 2 HC, I noticed that
only ~ a pin-head sized bump of dried (removable)
residue on the skin has left. The Vista split (the big one
in the picture), earlier ones did not. HC did not split.
