Floating Solar Fountain

I looked at these fountains a few years ago and found them to be overpriced for what you get, about $80-$100. Now they're much more reasonable, so I picked up one when we went to the city. The complaint about them back when I was checking was that they get waterlogged. We'll see.

I put it in an old syrup kettle that DH's father used to cook cane syrup more than 50 years ago. It is in poor condition, but a great conversation piece; still holds water.

So, that's just a big tub of water with a floating solar fountain? It's awesome! If you don't mind my asking, how much does something like that fountain cost? I'd love to try something similar.

I don't actually have any experience. But .... living amidst a whole bunch of retention ponds on sand - I've done a lot of observing. I have long suspected that many of the retention ponds (around here) that have floating fountains must have them on some sort of depth auto shut-off. So that if the water level drops too low the pump shuts off. Even though we are the sunshine state, I don't think a solar floating fountain is going to provide much aeration. Actually, the technology and marketing for solar pump has changed quite a lot along with the time passing by. The cost for solar panels has droped significantly since the year of 2012. Aloha David, Thanks for the lava rock "ladder" idea, we do have critters that will probably end up in there at some point. The chickens by accident and the border collies by choice, probably. I guess we will need "dog proof" water lilies. A fragrant lilly would be nice, perhaps some water grasses as well. I don't think the plantings will stay put, though, since there will be swimming dogs pushing them about so I was thinking a lot of the plants would be planted alongside the stock tank instead of directly in it. We don't have much "wild" fresh water, just the occasional stream that goes to the ocean so there aren't a lot of local freshwater fish. We do have lots of salt and some brackish water fishes. I was thinking guppies and koi to eat the mosquitoes. Hmm, maybe some prawns would work in the pond. I don't know if they eat mosquitoes, though. Does a water garden pond have to be drained every once in awhile? I'm thinking of either putting it up in the back of the yard by the shed where the bees can drink from it. I'm putting a lanai (porch) on the shed since it has a lovely ocean view. A nice water garden at the edge of the porch might be nice. The other option for the tank would be down the hill by the house. Just outside what will eventually be the dining room window. I could set it in the hillside and perhaps put a fountain from the hillside behind it into the tank. A wall "mask" fountain. The drain would be easier from the upper location, but we could use the tank fountain as the "diversion" load from our wind generator. (Sometimes we need to waste power when the wind blows too hard.)

Cheap, cheap, cheap. You know the import tool company that sells online, has mailorder catalogs and stores in many cities? Email me if you don't know what I'm talking about, or google for: floating solar fountain.

Remember what I said about the complaints in the past that those things took on water. I'm hoping that if that is going to happen it happens before the 3 month warranty expires. Their Greenhouse vent openers failed just about the time the warranty went out.

It also only works when the sun is shining, LOL. Not a problem here.

I love it! Is it in a bed close enough that you can sit nearby and hear it?

I would like to have a bird bath mister type thing. I don't think they even need electricity. Just the water pressure keeps them going.

I bought a heat gun from that company. It lasted 3 months and 2 days. It was $9. I got that much use from it.

Let us know how you like it. I'm gonna need something next year. Been thinking about solar.

I like it a lot, Nell. Maybe I'll have to consider doing a little water feature, just so I can use one.

On a side note, I'm wondering why you are hesitating to mention the company's name. Is there a strict policy on GW that forbids it?

Dh buys some things from HF ... nothing electrical.

Nell, looks like you have the all-in-one unit. The panels are under water? Now you have me curious too. I have an electrical fountain in the back, but it would be nice to have one outside the kitchen window where I can see it all the time.

This fountain thing is just a fun item. I couldn't resist because they were there, I was there and I had twenty dollars and tax. I bought one of those little electric pumps, too, to replace in my little concrete fountain that burbles in the greenhouse in the winter. The cat thinks it is his private drinking fountain.
