Can a cold frame be used to extend season?

I am in zone 6 with unpredictable late frosts. Our winters are milder than zone 6 usually, but it does occasionally throw some real weather at us. I am wondering if the use of a cold frame would extend the season for figs. A cold frame is like an unheated greenhouse. I suppose with adequate planning, it could employ the use of heatsinks and have a passive heating system using block or water as conductor of solar heat. I read on here that it is better to give figs dormancy, but do they have dormancy in their native areas? I thought greece and italy had mild weather year round. Do they rest during dry seasons in warm climates? I haven't found this type of information yet, so if anyone knows.......... Thank you, 3jsmom31
