Russian sage

treelover

Can anyone here tell me what to expect from Russian sage? How long does it take to grow to full size? Does pruning after it's started to grow in the spring affect blooming that year?

I planted about a dozen in a new bed in the fall of 2007, and they really haven't done much since then. I've pruned them back to the ground at the end of each winter. This year, after they had grown about 18" they looked spindly, so I took about 1/3 off the tops. They started to bloom several weeks ago--but not as well as last year.

I didn't amend the soil when I planted them and haven't fed them at all, since I keep reading that they like poor soil. I've watered them a little lately since we've only had a small amount of rain in the past couple of months. Drainage is very good; I checked that before planting.

There are several rosemaries in the same bed that are going great guns, but the Russian sages look pretty sad to me, especially when I compare it to photos that I see everywhere online.

Does it sound like I'm doing anything wrong? Tia -- Carol
