Picea orientalis 'Nutans' - could it be something else?

After reading the post about 'Nutans' and how irregular its growth is, I started looking at photos on various sites and it certainly can have funky shapes. Mine is pretty regular - see below. Is it possible that mine was mis-identified, or is it simply its own individual shape (and the fact that it is a young specimen)? Any thoughts?

In my idea it's not a "Nutans" !
It's not the shape and the colour.
However it's a nice plant.

Any thoughts as to what it might be? It has gorgeous cones - quite reddish when new.

OP and alley .... ALL green conifers are full sun .. zone appropriate .... of course ... as you add foo.. as in foo foo.. moving away from green.. you move into plant tissue that might not 'take' full sun ... and usually that means scorch.. either summer or winter ... but ... when you plant a tree/conifer... you completely and totally interfere with its roots system.. and it can take a few years.. for it to re-establish its roots mass ... and while it does that.. foo foo foliage can burn ... so daves solution ... is to shade it ... unprofessional.. i think.. has a pic of a 40 footer at hidden lakes.. dax has one also.. its in full sun... the plant itself.. does NOT need shade.. all you are doing is trying to protect it from your handling of it ... thru planting ... does that make any sense ...??? and .. many.. yellow tissue conifers.. will be GREEN!!! ... in too much shade.. its a real dichotomy as the sun burns them.. but they need it to color properly.. and it is impossible.. for us.. on words or pix alone.. to define whether any given shade.. in an given garden.. will grow a green or yellow plant ... as noted.. the 40 footer is at least 15 feet wide.. i really think.. presuming you stay at the house.. that you will be regretting planting it that close the power lines.. regardless.. do whatever makes you happy ... ken

Yea, I did, way back when. Same principal applies today. Only thing different is the roll of the wife and man are sometimes bass ackwards in this day and age for one reason or another. I worked a 8 hour day and came home and did the wished done list. She stayed at home and did what most moms do...a multitude of things. It worked well for both of us with never a complaint or thinking the other had the best go. Since you are in the reversed roll I have to admire you for taking on that challenge. Something I can't even relate to or for that matter even think of doing. Things were different way back then... Best, Dave

where did you find the name???? have any links to share???? the link below .. indicates iseli is trialing some seedlings ... they are one, if not the, biggest wholesalers in the US .... either email them.. or use their website to find a local retailer.. then contact them.. and see if they can order one for spring shipment .... i have never heard of it before.. so i suspect.. it may be incredibly hard to find... which is part of the 'collecting' thing .. getting somethign that rare is half the fun of it ... good luck ken PS: skylands is extremely borderline for my z5 ... and you are in 4 .... you might want to think that part out, before investing a lot of money ... What is the color of the new growth? Similar or very contrasting from the old foliage? So many in this complex have red cones that there are a lot of possibilities. Do you have a series of pics from seedling/graftling up?

To me it looks more like a 'Pendula' type, for sure not a 'Nutans'...

how does it differ from skylands .. which i presume you have in the garden???

based on the variable growth of the leader.. shall we presume it was a large rather recent transplant????

Ken - the new growth is light green - no yellow. It was planted about a year or so ago (a good deal at end of season/potbound). Edwin got your pm and will reply - have been away so need to get back at my desk in a few days!

Not 'Nutans'.

Not discombobulated enough..growing on the straight.

Dave - that's what got me wondering...everyone's posts of theirs looked a whole lot more discombobulated than mine. Sam I'll check out 'Gowdy'...and try to take some photos of new growth in spring. Thanks all -

The form of this could be 'Nutans". I am growing two that I got from Suncrest Gardens in PA. They are very irregular when very young, but after 6 or 8 years or so they begin to develop an upright leader and adopt a weeping form that retains some irregularity, but generally grow in a more or less balanced form. Very graceful in my opinion.

As for the color, I don't know. Different things can affect color.
