Ok, so you've got the name written differently. Which way is proper? I mean, if I spend money to purchase an engraved plate, I want to be absolutely certain. You know? LoL

Also Sam, can you describe the conditions, lighting I mean, is it shaded a good deal? In partial shade? How many hours of strong sunlight... that kind of thing. Do you have an image of yours with the pink candles by chance? :)

Reason I am asking is, My husband wants me to plant mine in a spot where I currently have a very very large peony. He says he absolutely detests the peony. Which happens to be located on the front side of a corner of the house. It's in a good bit of shade there due to a little leaf linden tree and my neighbors horrid trees that drop fairly large 'twigs' all over the place. LoL

Hey, Tina. I have been told by authorities more competent than myself that the spelling I show is in fact the proper spelling for the Japanese translation.

The first picture does show the pink candles. When growth rate is greater (which alternates from year-to-year), the pink candles are even more spectacular. However, that is what they looked like at their best this past spring.

I had it in direct sun for 5+ hr/day for one summer and the lighter-pigmented white needles suffered from burning which ruined the variegation, so I moved it to a location which has less than 3 hours of direct sunlight in the summer, and the variegation doesn't burn any. So, shading certainly does help protect the "snow."

as you can see from the pic above.. the pink is the extending buds in spring .... which open to white tissue.. which eventually greens ...

it is NOT a strong grower ... it probably will not get large in your lifetime is what i mean .... not that is is a sickly plant ... in fact.. it barely exceeds mini growth rate.. making it a small dwarf IMHO ... [of course now, others will say it grows like a weed.. lol] ..

why invest in engraved labels.. a while back.. whaas had a post about how we label plants ... perhaps he can add the link ... but you may do whatever pleases you ...

based on its growth rate. i dont know if it is a replacement for the peony .... i have had mine for about 10 years.. and it is about 1/4 the size of a regular peony of the same age ... otherwise ... your words alone can not define the space for me ...

relish it.. its a very nice plant ...

as to spelling ... i tend to label according to how sold ... i do not bother to go back and change a label once i make it with the p touch ... but i do make note on my database ... after all .. few of us are running botanical gardens where proper labeling is requisite ...

I guess the brightness of the image threw me off. :) As for labeling, if I don't... I'll forget the name. I'm quite foggy headed, Um (blushes) Fibromyalgia makes me quite an airhead, it's called Fibro Fog. LoL I hate it, it's quite an embarrassment sometimes, but also quite funny sometimes. So... Laugh with me, or at me if the need arises and you all have to kick me in the fanny and remind me of something. Sometimes repeatedly! :D Ok? Anyway!

I really love the dwarf conifers, a few of the weeping and the Giant Sequoia'Sequoiadendron giganteum'.
Ken, I didn't want one that would grow like crazy, not yet. I'm still a newb to all this, I knew better than to get something that would grow like a weed and be something I couldn't handle. :) I'm a chicken like that! LoL Slower was a better choice for me for a first time try. I'm in absolutely no rush at all. ;) I got time and in 8 yrs, when DH retires, this little darlin' shouldn't be so enormous that I cannot dig it up and move it. I did want to dive into conifers tho. So... That's why I purchased this particular one. It was the only one that screamed at me. I know you know what I mean by that.

Personally, I want to plant this particular conifer in the back, but there is far too much sun back there for it. I am pretty sure the best spot is either that bed, or if this little conifer can handle more sunlight, I've another spot in the back by the deck I can plant it which is currently shaded by an elm with dappled shade.

Don't be frazzled if you plant is bent up in the box, they do bounce back. I just got a Picea mariana 'Golden' from them that was bent in half when I got it. As expected its back to normal now.

Thanks Whaas lol I just checked UPS, it's leaving Chicago. Heh, can't wait for it to arrive! :D I'll get pics of it when it gets here.

My planting dilemma is either not enough sunlight or too much sunlight. LoL What to do... what to do...

Best solution is the spot in the back yard, beside the deck, it gets more sun, but has most dappled light to full shade during the absolute hottest scorching part of the day here. So I think that'll be where this little beauty will go.

I am so excited to get this particular conifer and I truly appreciate all of the help you guys have given me. :)

IMHO.. its not for the BACK of a bed ....

but then.. you havent really defined the layout of your bed.. so i am just speculating ....

and what are you going to do.. tromp thru the bed.. and get on your hands and knees to focus on the pink????

No I won't Ken, this little beauty will be right up front in a place all to itself pretty much. Shaded by the large Elm over head most of the hottest part of the day. What I meant by in the back, I meant in the back yard. ;)

Sorry if I didn't specify clear enough Ken hehe. Still chucking about tromping through the bed to focus on the pink tho. I just love your humour Ken. You always crack me up every single time. LoL

Early morning sunshine will provide sunlight and late afternoon sunlight will provide sunlight with the hottest part of the day being shaded for this one.

I've planted it beside the deck, when you walk down the steps, off to the right of the deck, if you stand on the lower portion of the deck you can look down and see the Pinus parviflora 'Tanima-no-yuki'. There is a bit of mint growing to the left of it but that will be removed in the spring and planted in the flower bed that is currently being built by DH for me. :) Click the picture to see more than this one image if you want to see them all.

Loved the link, the picture of the fluffy white newer needles was lovely! :) My "Tanima no yuki' is very sparse right now but very upright, got it staked to straighten it from shipping. Can't wait to see new growth on it. Such a lovely conifer.
