When does your cardial flower bloom?

I planted two of these plants last fall. They have cute rossettes and have grown wider but no stalks of flowers yet. I thought they bloomed in July. Mine will never make it if they are supposed to bloom in July.

I am still waiting too ! I planted mine the first of May and they are bigger and strong looking but they wilt in this heat and have shown no sign of blooming...will look forward to an answer. c

Mine bloom in Aug-Sept, very late, but I am in Z5.

Those are "sulphureus" types of Cosmos, right? The bipinatus type (and I know I've screwed up the spelling on one or the other or both) tend to reseed and be more vigorous sprouters, bloomers and growers for me. The sulphureus type are much more picky...at least that's been my experience. Linda

When does your bloom season start?

I live in Central Florida 40 miles from Tampa and 60 miles from Orlando on the I 4 corridor. My bloom season can start as early as March or as late as the end of April as it did this year. One year I had blooms in Feb on Valentines Day. If the temps get back down to normal range temps I can say that blooms will start popping up by the end of March with the scapes appearing and then the blooms themselves will be in towards the end of April or the begining of May. As I write these words tonight, I have a scape that is up about 8-9 inches on EYE CATCHING. I will let it grow on and if bad weather is threatening, I will protect it.

What does it mean when your blooms don't have a color?

Those blooms don't look white to me, rather a pale pinkish/lavander. Mine looked like that when I purchased them but when established in my garden (acid soil) they are med/bright blue but I still get lavander now and then. Are they 2 years in your garden or 2 years old period? Maybe some alum sulfate sprinkled around the drip line would kick start them.....yg

I planted three Ruby Slippers last year. Two came back. They are healthy looking with buds but probably won't bloom for another couple of weeks. I bought three more cardinal flowers of another variety from Bluestone this year. They are shorter and are blooming now and are more of a scarlet red. The Ruby Slippers are more of a burgundy. When they bloomed last year, they put on a show from around the first week in Aug. til the end of Sept.-beginning of Oct. They are next to my pond and I keep them pretty well-watered. I love cardinal flower-it's my favorite summer flower!
