Thanks, Lrae. It is a brand new, first time bloom for this seedling. Our friendly Ed says that it is normal for daylilies in this mid-summer Texas heat to double and polypetal, so I may never see this bloom again. It may just be a fluke.

I did have Silk Degrees bloom as a true double yesterday -- two pistils and 12 anthers all in one bloom. Strange, hunh?

I really like that flower. It has the two best colors a flower can have, and has the double as well. Since I'm scientist I think you really need to send it to me for intensive study.

No record, Ellie, sorry. I just crossed a very vigorous, healthy diploid that has big gold flowers with a rust overlay -- that creates a glowing effect --- with one of the many reds I bought last year from Tranquil Lake Nursery. Paid no attention to who was who on the crosses, cause I was just carried away with making seed pods. Somehow, I ended up with a lot of very colorful seedlings, many with huge yellow "star" throats. I was just having loads of fun without a thought about keeping records. That was before I got serious about daylilies.

Most of my diploids are from the garden of a long-time hybridizer and former colleague of mine, who is well-known in our local area for fine quality daylilies. When I asked him for names, he just brushed me off. I suspect his cultivars have some very good genetics behind them.

Nancy, that is a fantastic seedling. How big is the bloom? I surely hope that it blooms like that every time. It seems like everyone really likes it. If you need it tested further north (say in the Nashville, TN area), just let me know :) I enjoy the names you give your babies.

Thanks, everybody! As for size, I didn't measure it, but I'd guesstimate that it was about seven inches in diameter. If I had spread out the petals it would have been more.

I'll check tomorrow to see if it is multiplying. I had another pink seedling that opened up looking like a bowl of ruffled flamingo feathers. The first two blooms were like that, and then on the third one it was no longer a double.

He is a beauty!I will be watching his progress with interest.

O.K. Here's some stats real quick coz I gotta run go do some stuff. Got another bloom today, and it measured 9-7/8" across, stretched out; seven inches otherwise; scape was between 21-23" as I had hubby's measuring tape instead of yardstick.

It has lots of fans - too many and too compact to count them. Maybe 6-7?

Will post photo of next bloom -- not as pretty, a little doubling but nothing like the first one. Looks like thrips might have affected it some.

Here's the next day's bloom after a rainy night. It's splotchy and not got nearly as much doubling, but is still pretty big. The red is actually much more intense than the picture shows.

Thanks, Lrae. A friend came over today and we both have decided that we like Jeweled Star better.

Would you believe that Texas Fire Marshal has a proliferation that is sending up a scape with buds on it? I've never seen that before.

I think these seedlings are doing so well because I used Jack Carpenter's soil formula when we prepared this section.
