I would leave them alone if they are still stressed. You are not supposed to fertilize a weakened plant and no, I don't remember why but there was a reason.

Did you cut them back or leave all the foliage when you planted them? If they were fully leafed out, not trimmed and planted, this could be the problem. If they were cut back, the new growth will be coming from the center of the fan and the edge leaves will start dying off naturally.

I would make sure they get an inch of water a week and just keep watching.

I'm in Colorado also and the new daylilies I got in the late April/early May time frame are just now starting to perk up. I did fertilize them just last week with mild fertilizer. They didn't look stressed as Brooke cautioned against, just poutty. Since most of them came from warmer climates, it could be that our unusual Spring this year has them a little confused. Kinda hard on any new plant when it's 90 one day and can barely break 60 the next.

Oh, and don't forget all the wind we've had lately!!! With the constant movement of the plant, they may be having a hard time establishing their feeder roots. Just a thought.

If the manure was well composted you are probably ok if not it will be too rich for a newly planted DL. Keep them well watered and they will be fine, they just need to settle in and put out new feeder roots, fertalizing now won't do any good...wait until they have strong new growth.

I suppose that means that I just need to be more patient. All of my plants are new and I am just busting to see some blooms!

Brooke, I got the plants from Oakes and they send them already trimmed back quite a bit... The new growth just seems very slow coming in on some of them.

Deb, you aren't kidding about the wind! Here on plains in Calhan, the lid to my rabbit hutch got blown clean off and almost killed my baby bunnies when the corner landed back in the hutch. But, I hadn't thought about it causing problems with the plants growing roots.

Jerry, the steer manure was store bought, so I am truly hoping that it was well composted (it didn't smell or anything). We also didn't use a whole lot of it, simply because these are new plants and I was afraid of burning the roots.

When you said you live in Calhan, I thought it sounded familiar so I looked it up on the map. It really started to look familiar then so I checked an e-mail I had gotten from my sister back in Dec.. I could never figure out why she sent it to me other then by mistake but it was for a horse property in Calhan (she raises Welsh Cobbs in IN.). How weird is that that you now live in that same town??!!?? But to make it even weirder, her B-day is the same as yours!!!!

Monica, welcome back. Your absence was noted, I went to school in Colorado so always perk my ears up when it is mentioned. I loved it there.
How hard it must have been to leave every one of your plants behind! But then again, starting fresh can be really fun too.

I think I know what you mean by your new plantings kind of limping along. I got in 4 orders this spring, and the first one I got at the end of April, and they look the worse for some reason. They are very slow to send up new green, and are stunted looking. I am a little worried about them, because my other more recent orders look much better. I feel like throwing lots of fertilizer or something on them, but know that is not the thing to do.

Patience, I guess, and better weather is the answer.

Sharon, in a strange way, I am glad I was noticed at all in the first place! I wonder if we both didn't try to start a little too early with the spring planting. The more recent plants that I have planted are the better looking ones here, too. I was out watering earlier and I found some new scapes on a couple of the first batch I planted, so maybe things are starting to look up here.
