Yes, we have 3 Nubian does on lease helping us with the underbrush control to reduce fire danger & mosquito habitat as well as increase air circulation around the yard. Leaning mature fir & hemlocks near goat pen will also be taken down since they're too close to the house. When plants cover it, it will appear less wide than the walk, which will give a pinched look to the entrance. It would be better if the vines did not encroach into the walk space. A foot taller wouldn't hurt either. We were thinking we'd leave the arbor fairly empty or entirely bare with just potted plants on the sides or very small shrubs. Our plant ideas were a small clematis or an evergreen like Euonymus fortunei 'Emerald Gaiety' or 'Emerald & Gold' because it grows slowly & can easily be kept to the outside of the arbor. We may use a gothic arch with the point at the top or build something larger with wood. Still thinking & looking at it for awhile. Then we'll take a photo with the gothic arch in place. If it was my project I would start with hedge, to divide road from the house. It will frame,embrace all your plantings and give a clean line to all your plantings. Build retaining walls if you have an access to stone. Build all Garden structures first. Then you will see how it will affect Sun exposure (shade) which may affect plants you have to plant. And yet. I have noticed (on a couple of pictures) that area looks a little mossy. Do you have wet area? Or it is just drainage and shade issue? If so, before you plant anything, do some research on culture of plants you want to grow. Especially, I would be very careful with Lilacs. They DO NOT tolerate any water issues Speaking of Lilacs? You do know, that Lilacs need an extending cold period, in case to bloom heavenly? There,on a market, are a few Cultivars which have been bred for warmer climates. We've lived just a short distance away for 25 years, so I know the growing conditions well and have many plants nearby that thrive. Yes, the soil favors moss -- acidic, compacted glatial till with clay, no topsoil, 65+ inches of rain yearly (with little rain 4th of July - early Sept sometimes October), & shade (removed a lot of trees close to house already). Grass will grow again when we correct those things. We already notice the increased light & air circulation, so the area isn't as damp & cool. I'll post updates after more completion. Vigorous growth to about about 20 to 30 feet high and 8 to 10 feet wide. Probably not a good fit for filtered shade. Cryptomeria Radicans Somewhat arborvitae looking to me from a distance. Growth rate once it get going of 3-5 feet per year. Maturing to heights of 35-45 feet with an approximate spread close to 20 ft. Good fit??? you decide. If my place no. A few thoughts because you want to buy them so big. B&B..if so purchase in Spring when fresh dug. If potted then root bound problems would be a primary concern even though they could have been up potted. I would suggest you forgo a few years in height and by smaller specimens. Your survivability chances go up dramatically. Just some advice from someone who has been there and done that. I will suggest two other options in place of 'Radicans' and 'Cold Cone' that should fit your needs. Cupressus nootkatensis 'Green Arrow' 30 ft. in height give or take. Filtered shade OK. Goldilocks Larger oak in woodlands area.The pine in the center/right is a tri-trunked Vanderwolf pyramidal pine. A deer snapped the main trunk down to the ground (dont ask me? :), but luckily three branches also happened to be coming out right at ground level. (replace ground with mound, all my conifers get planted on large mounds). 4 years later and looking good. Until two years again I did nothing. Then i realized my smaller conifers were getting completely enveloped with vegetation. I also have various other larger types vines with leaves as well. P. Abies Skylands probably planted in the shadiest spot anyone on here has tried to plant a skylands in. This is in front of my front fence but before the street. When I bought the place in 2012 it was a 30’x80’x25’ rectangular prism of honeysuckle. I cut out all but the largest 15or so. Then cleaned up everything below 6’ so I could walk freely. Most everything above that (which made a 85-90% canopy coverage) stayed, Over the years Ive realized it is a lot of work to keep trimming, honeysuckle grows like crazy, even with the bottom 6’ of branches removed. Their are also a lot of tall trees just south of this in my front yard so this skylands could definately use more sun. In the ground for 4 years(when I cleared the honeysuckle out). Volunteer Ohio Buckeye on right. There are 2 other volunteer buckeyes in this area.

While a thread with one of my 'babies' is up, I will announce I am proud that one of my Abies firma is coning for the first time - the other one not pictured above: This one is about 25' high although I will measure it more precisely if I have time...it a little thinner and more sparse than the other one, probably because it was planted in more shade. I fully expect to see seedlings soon. At one of the Abies groves at the National Arboretum, I saw seedlings in the woods. Their foliage looked like Abies firma, but was fragrant, implying to me they might have been hybrids like maybe A. firma X A. alba. *NO* labeled Abies firma I've ever seen anywhere in the world, had fragrant foliage. And it's the only fir I know of with that identifying trait. Although Abies chensiensis, probably the closest relative to A. firma, is pretty weak. My longer needled A. recurvata, also in the momi section, has normal fir fragrance as do all the other firs I currently have. (the A. chensiensis died when I attempted to graft on top of it!) Here they were as rather pot bound 5' tall specimens at Triple Oaks Nursery in New Jersey, May 2010. Joe had them in some kind of 'air pots' that were planted in the very sandy soil there, on drip irrigation. Although the pots were like plastic baskets and not solid, the roots had still circled several times around the bottom edge. So, I unrolled them, and dug radial trenches, sometimes as long as 3', out from the edge of my planting hole. They were quite pliable so took to being straightened out without snapping. Well obviously they have both thrived.
