What is the best thing to insure repeat blooms from my 2 new repeat blooming daylilies? Cut all foilage to the ground after first bloom? Just trim old bloom stems? Feed?

Oh my goodness, don't even think about cutting the foliage to the ground. Not only would you not get rebloom, you wouldn't get many blooms at all next year. The plant must have leaves to get the energy to produce new bloom scapes. Do NOT trim the bloom stems (scapes) until they are completely dead. The plant will reabsorb the energy from those as they die. Cut the scapes after they turn brown. Watering is best thing you can do to promote rebloom. Daylilies need 2 inches of water per week and at least 6 hours of sun a day to rebloom. Also deadhead the flowers so seed pods do not form. I would NOT recommend fertilizing during the summer months. Next year fertilize in late April or early May to promote rebloom.

I wish my thinking were so orderly, and that I didn't so often simply need to get roses in the ground in a hurry. For me it's not so much once bloom vs. repeat bloom, but whether foliage and style fit together. Also, mixing roses up thoroughly is better than having one rose of a different type in the middle of a long bed all of a kind: I was relieved when my husband finally dug out 'Bonica' from a bed of once-blooming old roses. ('Cornelia' and 'Souv. de St. Anne's' are still there, but don't stick out as much.) But I could happily see reblooming Portlands, for example, mixed in with Gallicas, Damasks, Centifolias, etc. If you are going to have a very mixed up planting of roses, then added a lot of other plants will distract from the heterogeneity of the roses. Final thought: roses of different characters can go fine together, or not; it all depends on the specific varieties in question.

I have a couple (actually, my dad grabbed them when he saw them - so they're at his place.) Was unboxing them and he just. . . wanted them. They were a foot tall, and had blooms, and they're going to bloom again - while growing. They're actually very, very nice plants. I've only had this year as an experience with them, so I'm sorry, I cannot attest to anything else. They're hardy little guys, and the bloom is a very pale yellow aging to a peachy color. They're nice growers - even when you accidentally break off one half of the "Y" - they keep right on going, not missing a beat. I may order some for myself again next year. I rarely get any rebloom as our season usually short. Occasional fall I get some or other clem throwing blooms but it is a bonus. Of course, I garden in a lot of shade so my schedule might be different from yours. I see you are hostaholic as I am. I cohost with my neighbor plant swap here in Skokie every Memorial day weekend Friday eve, this year it is May 22 so if you available, mark the calendar. bart bart and Mina - Grandmother's Hat has an additional great trait - it roots ridiculously easily! I sometimes have difficulty rooting rose cuttings, even using the plastic bag method. However, I heard that GH would root if you just stuck pruning cuttings in the soil next to the original plant. I did not really believe that, but I did it twice, and it worked both times! Really - that's all I did, as well of course as making sure they were well watered. It also throws up a few root suckers (mine is on its own roots) now and then. I just dig them up and pot them if I want more GHs So, if you have two plants, you can make more easily. Mine occasionally get "Damask crud" if we have a very wet Spring, but I cut all of the mess off, and spray it with a fungicide, and it immediately puts out another clean crop of leaves & blooms, and stays clean after that for the rest of the year. Thank you. For years I've cut down regular day lily foliage after the blooms and then they shoot back up and the next summer I have fabulous blooms. I'll be careful to treat these differently and hope for another burst of blooms within the summer. They are "Happy Returns".

Gail - Happy Returns is a good rebloomer. Mine rests for several weeks before it reblooms, and sometimes doesn't rebloom until fall.
