We have powdery mildew-a microscopic fungal infection in both of our rose plants, and the veins did not turn yellow, rather the leaves had a splotchy or freckled appearance and also a rather shriveled look when they unfurled. If left they will turn brown, but they usually don't last that long as the lightest touch causes the leaves-sometimes entire shoots- to come right off. Even in the wind. Not the best news in the world. I don't think my miniatures are going to make it. I am no expert, however, so I may be wrong, though it does sound like what happened to our plants. On one plant this wasn't evident until I treated the leaves with an oil to smother the fungus, but on the other plant I noticed it before treating it with anything. Shawna From the Heart of the City

While leaf-curl CAN be a symptom of disease, it's also a physiological response to environmental stress -- too cool, too wet, too overcast, etc. As long as the curled leaves are still green and not wilted, I'd just wait and see what happens when your weather stabilizes. The continued yellowing on the lower leaves is just something that happens, and I've noticed it also seems to be a later response to the continuing environmental conditions that cause curled leaves. I don't think your plants are disease-troubled, though you should remove any leaves that have died to prevent disease entry or insect interest. One thing the "disease-pest" sites don't say is that tomato and other plants NEVER have perfect leaves throughout the entire season. They don't say that leaves which have contributed all they can to the plant's health and growth will turn yellow and die, and it can even happen pretty early in the season, depending on environmental conditions. They don't show pictures of plants with vigorous healthy top-growth but scraggly and discolored leaves on the bottom with the caption, "This is a healthy plant." So we may become alarmed and think our plants are diseased when they really aren't. I think we need to familiarize ourselves with at least one major plant disease (and pest damage) that occurs in our local area so we can recognize it if it appears on our tomato plants. It would be a REAL service to gardeners if Extension Services offered seminars to thoroughly educate people about tomato plant diseases and their control so we could be reasonably confident about what we're seeing.

Thank you WIP08. After many, many tries with sms alerts from a website called wiialert, I was able to order one today! I was able to order one a week ago from Sears, but my order was cancelled the next day, and my money was refunded. Apparently Sears has a marketplace, just like Amazon, and it wasn't from Sears but another vendor through Sears, and I suppose the seller realized he could get 2X as much as the retail price, he cancelled my order and relisted it for twice the price. Then a friend of mine in the South put it on FB, and one of her friends stepped up and was willing to sell it to me. But when I contacted her, she never responded. Then on Leapfrog's fb page people were recommending to try these websites that alert you when they come back in stock. You have to be really quick, b/c they will sell out in less than 2 minutes. After numerous attempts, I finally was able to order one today. During all this, a friend of mine became really ill and was hospitalized. In addition, my sister had surgery and had to have half her thyroid removed. I decided not to make myself crazy over it, because in the end, it's really not that important. I just didn't want to disappoint my daughter, who has been talking about the silly leappad every day with her sister. In the end I got one (at least I'm hoping I did). I just think it's really sad that there ARE so many available through scalpers on eBay and Amazon, who want to take advantage of parents like me who just want to give their kid the ONE toy they are asking for at Christmas.

be nice to know where you are .. and what the weather was this summer .. in my TWO! droughts.. this is rather common ... melt out is not necessarily just a sun problem.. its a lack of water issue .. more specifically with hosta in too much sun .... hosta sweat ... perspire.. give off water .... and when they lose more water than they can take in.. they start getting crispy .. and white is the worst tissue for this effect ... bingo bango .. they get ugly ... but i cant stress how important it is.. as gary noted .... that it is basically fall .. and not every hosta looks good in fall ... and some years its worse than others.. depending on the summer weather ... ken ps: the plant also looks rather squat ... and i am betting.. its planted too deep ... so if you decide to move it.. replant at proper height ... [the top down pic doesnt help.... maybe its just a camera trick???]
