In our zone - yes. I did the same thing this year and have a handful of figs that should ripen by mid September

From my experience growing in containers when topping a plant ie: cutting the top main branch that it forces growth of limbs horizontally along some nodes of trunk which in turn eventually will grow figs on those limbs, i nip the end buds with fingers after the 5th or 6th leaf to then force those figs to ripen before frost here in my zone.

At the point of topping of main trunk it will still grow shoots around point of cut and same occurrence with the horizontal branches more shoots near point of cut these i keep off as they appear.

It absolutely works! I pinched mine, and have tons of new branches all with figs. This is my second year, and the first 3 figs were black, and withered. The fourth ripe fig was perfect! It was so good, my girlfriend wants me to make a baby fig from an air layer for her!

I just discovered more figs coming on!

I tried forcing my trees to produce figs. I threatened, I cajoled....I even begged. I was about to try slapping a couple of them around a little. Pinch em you say??? I'll give that a try tomorrow......

(Sorry. I think the heat has gotten to me. It's over 110 here again today).

My brother was reluctant to pinch. He eventually did and he has many figs now & has gone to 4/5 leaf to pinch tips. He is in paradise fig land Malaysia where figs grows & produce non stop.
