Fig trees for zone 6

Any body lives in DC and Baltimore metro areas or in Annapolis Maryland and was able to raise eatable figs please tell me what kind of fig tree. I know it has to be self-pollinating because the fig wasps do not live in zone 6 . Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Abe...

Don't worry...you have many varieties that will do well in your area. However, you mention nothing about how you plan to keep your fig tree alive from season to season.

Will you grow the tree(s) in large containers?
Will the tree(s) be planted in-ground?
Two, very different growing methods, each with advantages, and disadvantages.

"Bill's Figs" in Flemington, NJ. has a good selection. "Trees of Joy" has varieties that are hardy in your area WITH PROTECTION. Both are good places to start looking.

Figure out how you will grow, and winterize your tree. Then forum members can make better suggestions. Growing a fig tree is easy...keeping it alive is another story. It can be, and in fact, is done by many growers in your area.

One more idea: Neighbors. Look for productive trees in your area, and ask the owners if you could buy a rooted division of their trees. Most of the time they will proudly, give you a small tree.

Thanks frank. I have young fig tree (brown turkey) and I think I took care of it. I t is planted in a big container with holes in the bottom half. I planted the container in a raised bed. Last fall I dogged it out from the ground and took in the house. It survived very well and is getting bigger. I am planning to do the same for any new figs I will buy. The question I am concerned with is the pollination I want self-pollinated fig trees. I was told the fig wasp does not live in my zone.

They sell two different varieties. Hardy chicago and Black mission. They're talking about Hardy chicago that is suppose to be hardy. That's probably the last place I would get a fig tree from. judging by the photos they list of hardy chicago, it looks nothing like it.

I can't know for sure...but in my very limited experience, a first-year, in-ground, uncovered fig in zone 6 is surely dead. Assuming that your neighbor's plant is the same variety as yours and assuming that there are similar "microclimates" (e.g., sun, wind, water, etc. exposure), I would presume your plant dead. I had my third-year in-ground fig covered for the winter and still lost a fair number of tips. But at this time in zone 6, it is showing new leaf and breba crop growth. Temps here have been 50s-60s during the day and 40s (sometimes high 30s) at night. Regarding your neighbor's, I'm wondering if he did anything to protect it from the weather. Also, where is it situated...is there natural protection?

Joshua.... Honestly, in Zone-6....I'd over-winter those trees in a cooler area, like an unheated, but above freezing garage, then plant them, in-ground next spring. If you plant them after dormancy, and a cold snap hits your area, you may very well lose those trees. In Zone-6, even established trees are damaged, or, sometimes killed. Also, stop all fertilizers, now. If you push new, green, succulent growth, it will not have time to properly harden-off, and will be damaged by the cold. This forum, and the other fig forum has plenty of ideas and recommendations regarding how to care for young, newly rooted cuttings, and advice on how to over-winter fig trees. Your fig tress are young and tender, and will require some special considerations when it comes to winter care if you want to see those trees live to sprout next spring. It's not a big deal, but, it is what it is. Fig trees, and Zone-6 don't mix. It can be done, but, you have to take precautions. Hope this helps, and good luck with the Greeks. Frank

Bass, good find, keep us posted. So, all of us are wondering why you didnt offer to take the tree off of his hands if he was going to kill it. Heck he might have paid you! LOL! Kinda like driving pass an abandoned house and not getting cuttings then throwing a U-turn because you think, just maybe this could be the perfect fig!!! LOL!

Abe,

I live in Winchester, VA area with great growing success. I have learned many growing, pruning and winterizing tips from the greats on this forum.
The Brown turkey was also my 1st which is now one of my 10 in ground growers. My other favorites are the Celeste, Chicago hardy, LSU Purple. I have 2 container plants, although they produce earlier, the in grounds grow
, thrive and produce better.
Find a link to Edible Landscapes in Alton, VA, they are a great producer of the Figs and excellent source of info.
