Four years of Picea abies 'Suncrest'

Undoubtedly one of my favorite Norway spruce, this small gem is a slow grower, perhaps an inch or two a year(2-3 cm) and has exceptional different season appeal with soft green new growth, maturing into a multicolored appearance similar to Picea omorika.

It's a plant I can't recommend any stronger to any gardener or conifer grower alike.

Full sun is a must for this beautiful effect.

i had a suncrest plant for quite a few years.. wondering when it was going to turn yellow.. to fulfill its name.. before someone told me.. its a nursery name.. rather than some pun on gold coloration ... lol ..

anyway ... glad to have you back ... nice plant ....

ha ha, "why haven't you planted this one yet?" Your right, I'm kicking myself for not getting this one with my spring orders after seeing yours. It looks like it could almost be a ground cover. I would love to have this slowly spreading down the side of a slope. Your 'Pusch' looks perfect. How long do the cones keep their red color?

A beauty! Interesting story (to me, anyway): Couple of years ago I picked up a couple of plants at a ShopKo clearance (I know, I know...) labelled Picea abies 'Bird's Nest'. I was confused but overlooked my confusion because I had just gotten what I convinced myself were two Bird's nest spruce for about 3 bucks apiece. When I planted them the nursery tag said Picea mariana 'Ericoides.' At that time I decided I should try to find out what they REALLY were, to no avail. Left them behind at our former home that is now a rental. Both still alive but with zero new growth and one looking pretty much like death warmed over. Note to self: you usually get what you pay for.

Great pictures. I love 'DelBar's Cascade' too, but it's the way it fits into your garden that really does it for me. Your 2012 picture is fantastic! In that 2012 shot, what's the gold pine at bottom right, also what's the gold bun behind and to the right? The latter looks a little like 'Tom Thumb Gold', but it looks like it's growing too fast for that cultivar. is that 'Kotobuki' on the other side? Alex

doesn't seem to burn in full sun ==>> if i were garen .. i would not compare midwest INDIANA full sun .. to the PNW ... it MIGHT have to do with full sun and cool nights .. a recovery period lets call it.. that we in the midwst dont have .. especially in july/august ... but then the burn doesnt show until after winter burn ... something about those blistering winter winds and all .... and i dont mean to knock this specific plant .... i have no experience with it ..... its just.. as a hosta grower ... my radar always goes up ... when regional claims of sun tolerance are mentioned .... i would suggest that it remains to been seen as to its sun tolerance ..... until its been garden tested in more diverse regions ....... should bob wish such.. he can send me a plant for long term observation ... .. lol .. i am just kidding ... momma said its not becoming to beg ... and i listened to momma.. ken

Very Nice, Unique color for Picea abies.. even nicer, because Picea abies grows well around here! Great to have you posting here again These "4 year threads" have always been great reference points for me.

I'd agree this is one of the nicest looking dwarf Picea abies (non gold varieties).

My dog crushed my original but put in a replacement 2 years ago. Must have!

Conifer Kingdom has bp for $20, good buy for an early spring shipment.
