Karen, looks like petunias get sad after plant out. i planted few to hanging basket which were almost 4 inch tall and they are lying sad in the basket. i hope they will stand tall after few days. v1rtu0s1ty, at my neighbourhood last year, petunia were good till frosts started, almost start of november.

You would not have needed to pinch if you had longer summer. Since you are in Zone 6, you may still pinch after the 6th leaf even if the embryos are starting sooner. This way the branch will be diverting more nutrients etc to the fewer figs for better quality and earlier ripening instead of using for growing more vegetation. The issue is not so clear-cut because extra leaves, if not pinched, will provide energy feedback to the plant. However, pinching will help as far as the current fruit growth and ripening is concerned.

this spring I planting a 4 foot black mission twig that was rooted and only had a single limb. the base is only about 1" in diameter. It has grown up to about 6' now and has leafed out nicely. Problem it is it now end of August I have have not seen any fruit. the main branch below the first limb has many nodules but no growth. How do I prune this back to stimulate lower limb growth so that it bushes out and produces in the spring? If I cut off the upper part of the main trunk, can I replant the portion that I cut off? That's what happened to me...I had a roma, it had every problem imaginable...I finally cut it down with pruning shears and was going to pull and toss it into the compost heap. The day I decided to go ahead and pull it, I found dark, full leaves. I waited a few days (and started watering it, lol) and saw some sad little stems in between the thick, heavy ones. Those, I pinched, then I just let it do it's thing. I didn't even try to trellis it. I got over 17 lbs of toms from that plant! (enough to can 5 quarts of sauce AND get the paste from the slipped skins!) Prayer is the FIRST thing I do in my garden every morning! Let me know how they do!
