Washed out blooms???

I'm having several plants that are having what I call "Washed out Blooms". Is this something I should be worried about? Do you know the cause? I'm going to show pictures of an established plant 8 years in my garden, QUINN BUCK.

There will be 2 pictures of each. The first one is what it's supposed to look like, the second is the problem.

Then I'm going to show pictures of a new arrival that has had 3 scapes with appx 20 blooms with no problem until yesterday. The second picture is yesterdays and it shows the "Washed out bloom".

It's also happened to several other of my new arrivals, but when it happened on my established plant, this concerns me.

I have no clue to the answer to your question, but would like to know also...It's almost like you have albino blooms or something. I had this happen one time several years ago with Siloam Bye Lo. This is a horrible picture taken late in the evening and there was lots of insect damage.

A lot my blooms have looked washed out this week. I figured it was a combination of the high temps and drought.

A horrible non-summer here, horrid late freezes which destroyed blossom on tons of fruit, drought till March then it rained.......and rained....and rained some more. It is raining now. Roses have all put out loads of vegetative growth, not so many blooms and fungal nightmares are lurking everywhere. Absolute rubbish- ZEPHIRINE DROUHIN, PHILIPPA RENAISSANCE, LILIANA RENAISSANCE, SUMMER SONG, HOT CHOCOLATE Struggling, but surviving- FALSTAFF, JUDE and PAT AUSTIN, my troika of Austins, planted in the same garden area, and all looking a bit ropy. JAQUES CARTIER/MARQUESA BOCCHELLA- doing itS usual collapse and continual dieback from every bud. CARDINAL HUME- a blackspotter, but so lovely. Completely naked - MUTABILIS, also struggling and looking dread - WILD EDRIC Looking unexpectedly chipper - NASTARANA and ICEBERG, in my rose hedge, look promising and co-operative - somewhat worried about the endless snaky growth of AYRESHIRE SPLENDENS. Top of the class - a bunch of Lens hybrid musks - JACQUELINE HUMERY, MATCHBALL, SIBELIUS, PLEINE DE GRACE - completely free of disease. DARLOWS ENIGMA - I believe this is going to thrive in East Anglia, PENNY LANE, a little Harkness climber completely pristine, as is another Harkness climber, PERPETUALLY YOURS. Also (and I was warned otherwise, MEG is doing really well and so is NAHEMA - a very refined rose (for me) but surprisingly healthy. Also, another Kordes rose, JASMINA, vigorous and healthy - just the odd spotty leaf. Finally, spotless AIMEE VIBERT, R.POMIFERA DUPLEX, HELENAE HYBRID, LEONTINE GERVAISE and all the pimpinellas and early spring species are weathering the lack of any real summer sun.

Nicole, Oh girl your Cal Sunset will be GORGEOUS with this heat along with your Divine... I am so jelous my sister lives in San Marino and was complaining that she was in the mid 90's yesterday, I had been at my plumie patch in the south bay and it was 72, windy and gorgeous and cool. I loved it but my plumies didnt. I hired this old Korean man that I was paying him to water my plumies and pick up old leaves and old blossoms last season, well I guess his English is not that good and he didnt understand when I told him not to water. Well the crazy watered all winter, even when it sprinkled. I have never ever had winter rot on any of my plumies and this year cause of the money grubbing, water happy crazy Korean man I have had a ton of rot. Water would accumulate in spaces between branches and the trunk and sit there in the cold and sometimes limited light and cause rot. I had to hack down one of my huge imported from Singapore plumies that was 7 yrs old because 70 percent of the branches had rot where the branches connected to the trunk. Today while I was at my patch and moving some plants I found my Barry Ng's True orange from Singapore and my Hawaiian flag plants, both huge, moving around in their pots. When I grabbed my True orange by the trunk to pick up the pot a second time the pot fell to the ground while I was still holding the True orange tree. There was little root system left and the bottom wood under the soil line was soft. I had to cut 1 ft of trunk away to get clean wood. I also cut down my Hawaiian flat as she was 4yrs old and when I got her she was alredy 4ft tall and multi tipped. With Hawaiian flag the only thing I oculd do is cut off her branches as the trunk was funky all the way to the top where all the branches were...so I will have a lot of Hawaiian flags now..lol I also think my Kimo may have issues also as she seems loose, I have had this one since 2002 so she is a big girl....would hate to have to cut her down also grrrrr.. Cold Summer Temps Effect on Blooms

Hey Thanks ya'll!! Bill where I live it is about 10 to 15 degrees warmer than my patch. I have been to the patch almost everyday Spraying miticide, Fungicide and fertilizing and SNG, plus repotting. The temps on an average have been as of yesterday around 69. I also went to my condo in Long Bch Yesterday and it was actually warmer there than even at my house..lol So go figure the weather is too weird. Bill the Golden Rainbow cutting you generously gifted me rooted so can not wait to see her blooms THANK YOU!!! Well I can not wait for A LITTLE more heat..lol I do not want Houston or Miami heat.. Thanks again and lest enjoy the cooler 2009 growing season

Pat at Roses Unlimited is very nice, she cleared up the shipping confusion, by listing an example for CA, where the shipping charge is $8 for each additional rose, rather than $5 to my zone 5a, Chicagoland. Here's what Pat of Roses Unlimited e-mailed me: "I will list the cost for CA just to show how it works- 1-2 roses - Minimum $22 3 roses - $35 4 roses - $35 5 roses - $40 After 5 roses the charge goes back to $8 per plant which was the same as last season so for 6 roses, it would be $48." Pat of RU. *** From Straw: For my zone 5a, IL, shipping cost would be: 1-2 roses: Minimum $16 3 roses - $26 4 roses - $26 5 roses - $31 After 5 roses, the charge goes back to $5 per plant, which will be 5 x 6 = $30 for 6 roses. So if someone buy 6 roses, then one gets the best deal in shipping. It's still confusing to me, since Pat gave me the breakdown for CA, and I had to figure out the break-down for my Illinois, which is east of Miss, River, with minimum of $16 shipping charge. Roses Unlimited is out of Young Lycidas, so I'll wait until next year to place an order. Pat also inform me that Boscobel won't be available next year, since it takes a few years before David Austin releases new roses.

I heard that reds need a lot of water to color up properly.Read in an article on hybridizing somewhere.It said reds need the most water to bloom true to color.One man's opinion perhaps.May help if you can give them more.

I am having a similar problem with buds that are very hard and waxy, then they partially open to reveal marbled coloring (the petals and sepals are both like wax). Any ideas?

Are the hard waxy buds on a plant that bloomed normally before?I know I sound like a broken record,but water and some decent sunshine are all they demand to bloom.

I haven't had the fade out problem. I am sorely short on water and can only give them enough to keep them alive. However, My darks, have been extremly dark. Brown Trowsers, which I posted on anothe thread was much much darker than ever before. Midnight Magic, whick is a dark purple red, was nearly totally black.. All my dls have been heightened in color...

This picture has not been tampered with and I made other pics at the same time. They were a little brighter than usual but not as extreme as this photo...I might add that this was very early morning..Around 7am...Ellie

I don't know if your pc shows it or not, but on mine this daylily has loads of blue in it. Now of course it just nearly lack but it does show highlights of very deep purple. It's just plum awesome.

I have several more today that are just basically without color. I'm getting concerned about this. It's on the rebloom scapes on my newest ones. If I hadn't had some on my older in ground ones do the same thing, I'd be really really worried that the potting soil, fert or mulch that I use in my pots might have something to do with it. I'm just going to have to keep my fingers crossed. Not all of them are doing this. I'd say about 10 out of the 3o or so that are currently blooming. Still way to high for me to like.

I sure hope it's heat related or drought. I keep them watered, they haven't been stressed by lack of water or too much water either. But I know that my watering is not like God's watering. So I'll just have to be patient and see what happens.
