Saw the first Japanese Beetles of the season

Just now as I walked around the gardens - on my big ferns down in the orchard - four of them. I squished 'em. So far, they're not on the rose still blooming down by the veg garden when I thought it would be done by now. The Virginia Creeper on the garage will be next to be attacked.

Perfect weather for the JBs - hot and humid, they love it.

I'm so sorry they decided to visit you. They are just awful, aren't they? I had my first one three years ago, and they have been pretty bad this year. I must have drowned forty or fifty today alone! Hateful, destructive little beasts>

I saw my first one yesterday, on mallow mauritiana. I promptly squished it and sighed a heavy sigh, since I know it is just the first of thousands.

Shoot it would not bother me. Dang destructive creatures. Dang squirrels been fighting for years. They go out of their way to torment me. After all my work. Been gardening for over 30 plus years. There is plenty for them to eat in this city burb. people feed them. Gobs of trees. If it wasn't for my overwhelming work to enclose raspberry patch I would not get one dang raspberry. Ive got sunburn and senior wrinkles and aching shoulders and hands. broken fingernails. No bleeding heart here. Haven't set traps lately. Hard to trap the devils.too dang clever Going to have to damn squirrels get my apples everyday. I have a small yard. Dang if Im sharing my small bounty with those RATS with tails. Ferrel cats are a pain too. Possums even here in the city. Im trying to calm down after finding a buried black walnut where a green bean seed was planted the day before.UGGG......LOL Sore knees from all this kneeling. But I love getting my hand in the dirt. delicious produce makes all the work worthwhile.Thanks for letting me vent. Good luck and happy gardening Jean

I went to the link and found 3 local places that sell Beetle Bags. Call my regular hardware store (listed). Do you have Beetle Bags (exact words)? Yes. Do you have plenty? Goes and looks. Yes. I'll be right down. So I get there, and they don't have them and come home with 2 boxes of Safer Japanese Beetle Traps. Sounds like a hassle to set up, but I will do it because I'm fed up already. Do you think they will be just as effective? The clerk said it was the same ingredients that attract them. Then the antidote if you poison yourself or get some on your skin sounds scary. Wash for 15 minutes. Call Poison Control Center and/or your doctor, if person is able to swallow, unconscious, and so on. So I'm supposed to hang them about 3' off the ground in a sunny spot away from my roses and more. Every sunny spot except right in front and middle of back yard is filled with my roses. Also, what happens with the bags when it rains?

The brand in the photo is Rescue. They have a zipper at the bottom that slides like a zip-lock bag. They're hard to unzip when they're full though. The zippers on mine finally broke so I've been duct taping Walmart bags to the bottom to catch the beetles. That works almost as well. Carmen - Do your neighbors have Asian Ladybugs too or do they all go to your house? The article below says "Contrasting light-dark features tend to attract the beetles -- dark shutters on a light background, light shutters on a dark background..." Another article I read said they're more likely to enter homes that have a cedar shake roof or wood siding. They invaded our shed one year but haven't moved into our house yet. Remove plants and trees that they eat. I removed a nicely growing Littleleaf Linden (Tila Cordata), although it never flowered, because by every mid August it's top half was left almost leafless. What's the point of keeping it, you only live once. Jap. B's eat in the afternoon, more importantly, eat in the sun. So any susceptible plants you have that can tolerate afternoon shade, will fare better from JB's if you move them to an afternoon shade location.

So sorry.

They've been here for a few weeks. The heat and humidity is so bad, that I've stopped fighting them. When they finish eating up the roses, I'll just cut them back since they are KOs. This is the time of year when I think of getting rid of those roses!

Last year was the first time I've ever had them. The invasion played a significant role in our decision to evict all but a few roses from the garden! I haven't seen any JBs yet this year, but I'm sure we're only a day or so away from another invasion. They were so gross! I tried picking them off the first day but gave it up as a lost cause.

I got freaked out when I read this. When I looked them up phew we dont have them (knock on wood) Found this site that has some suggestions and safe recipes.
