Daturas are night bloomers? I didn't know that. Mine are still pretty little, no buds yet. I don't have any other night bloomers.

I'm still waiting for the purple daturas to grow and the white 'shredded hanky' brugmansias to get buds. Daturas remain open in the daytime, but they first unfurl at night with incredible fragrance. I learned a new word: vespertine. A vespertine flower is one which opens or blooms in the evening.

Those are pretty. I didn't know Datura were night bloomers either. The only night bloomer I have is moonvine. First year I ever had one and I will never be without again.

nicotiana, 4 O'clocks, some daylilies, when we are able to landscape the back yard, I'll be looking for many more!!

I have a Crinum, the bulb on this one can get quite big. When it blooms it has fragrant pale pink flowers, this guy is one of the tender ones, which one it is I don't know. I also have a number of Brugs, Peaches and Cream is just finishing it's second flush of flowers as has Candida double white. I have 8 or 9 more pinks, yellows, oranges and white named varieties, most are old plants which I'm going to take cuttings from and toss out. I have far to many for the space I have to grow them. Will I ever learn. Nicotiana is on my want list. I use to have the tall white one Nicotiana S. which was perennial for me for about 4 years, it finally died out. Must have it next year.

Crinum sounds wonderful. I'll be looking into that one.

I have four o'clocks (couldn't rid myself of them if I tried), lots of nocotiana, and my very favorite - Evening Scented Stock. I've planted several of these and the fragrance on a warm night will knock you over. I can't rave about it enough.

Steven, there is a famous crinum grower here. Jenks Farmer is a very well respected horticulturist - he was in charge of the local botanical gardens for a while. Check out this website:

I have a lavender vine that blooms at night. It has blooms like a morning glory and the vine sets seeds before it starts blooming. I bought the seeds on eBay as lavender moon vine seeds. Does anyone know anything about this vine?

I got datura le fleur lilac seeds in the exchange but couldn't them to germinate. I'm trying four o'clocks from seed (they haven't germinated yet either). Are these seeds generally difficult to get to germinate or maybe it's my zone?

Linda, what you see is not crinum foliage, but a result of peculiar camera angle. The foliage is truly those long floppy, strappy leaves you would expect to see.

Lavender, daturas like really warm conditions to sprout and sometimes they're really slow. I found the yellow to be the easiest to grow from seed.

Steven, you might do a search for Marcelle Sheppard's crinums. Marcelle is the last word in crinums, IMHO. I think it's marcellescrinums.com. Lots of photos, lots of cultivars.

I forgot to say before that the crinum I showed is a 'Jagus' and that Billy Welch says that 'no crinum ever died.'

Nell ~ Great thread. Wow, to have those vanilla crinums would be something else. Your yellow daturas are beautiful! I've had some of the double purple and white. Didn't plant any seeds this year. Not even sure if I have anymore, dang. I need to check my seeds.

I also have the cereus. Noticed three buds yesterday and forgot to go out and look last night (had a headache), and noticed them early this morning so went out and took pictures, then DH took a couple from the shed roof later. Now they are all wilted and hanging down. I got my cereus as a 12"-18" piece from a customer at work a couple of years ago. Now it's about 30' up a slash pine tree along with Virginia creeper vines.

Other night bloomers or vespertines (that's a lovely word), jasmines, and 4 o'clocks, maybe a couple of others.

This one was taken by DH from the shed's roof. He tried to get me to go up the ladder to take the picture but I said no. I do not like heights at all. There is something terrifying to me about going up the ladder and taking that step off onto whatever, with nothing to hold onto. He encourages me and I've done lots of climbing when we've done our building projects and roofing around here. The older I get the worse my phobia is. : -(

Anyway, he was a sweetheart to take the picture for me.

Grand photos, Flower Lady. Mine is growing daily, in a hanging basket without hanger, plopped in a heavy ceramic container that won't blow over. The aerial roots have nothing to cling to; I've fastened the longest shoots to the metal carport post with velco floral tape.

Yesterday I noticed the bud had mealy bug! An alcohol swab took care of that. I expect bloom in about 5 days, and there's another teensy bud forming. They're exciting to watch grow, despite the awkwardness of the plants and the dilemma of where they'll spend the winter.

Do you want seeds of the yellow Datura?

Thanks Nell I wish we were able to see them fully open, but they are much too high anyway. Do take some pictures of yours when they bloom. I've got one growin up our front wooden arbor. I wonder how long it will be before it gets any blooms. I would love seeds of your yellow datura. Do you have blue pea vines? That's what I have seeds of right now. Can we send email via GW these days to exchange addresses?

Have you gotten any rain yet? We've had some good downpours and it's made a big difference in how everything looks. Now we need to mow and weedwack again. ;-)

How cold does it get there in the winter? DH and I would love to move to a quiet place in GA with more land and a little bit larger house than we live in now. Our area is becoming so congested with new construction and people. It's horrible. I've been doing some searching via the net in GA but haven't really found anything just yet. Some have sparked our interest though.

Only night bloomer in my garden is the moonflower.

Flower Lady, I sent you an email. We got 0.3 inch of rain day before yesterday. Things look greener, but it sure is hot. The cereus bloom is about 4 inches long and starting to turn up, the fat part about like a small egg.

Natal, the jagus is the only night-opening crinum that I know of. It stays open throughout the next day, unlike the cereus, which closes early the next morning. We went to pick tomatoes at a u-pick farm this morning and on the way I saw an enormous bed of what I think was 'Ellen Bonsequet' crinums, just beautiful!

The moonflowers that I planted this spring are slow to 'take off' -- I hope to see blooms before frost, LOL.

Good morning Nell ~ I'm at work, so will check my email at home later. Hopefully I got it. GW has been weird with mail service lately.

It is raining here as I type. A tropical wave is what's causing this rain, and it will be around for a couple of days. We've needed the rain and hopefully this will help raise the big lake in the state and end our drought conditions. Maybe you will get some much needed rain yourselves from this wave. Right now it is 75, which is nice for us. Hope you get some relief soon.
