I think my Fig tree is dead

We acquired a gorgeous fig tree with the purchase of a house.

I was around 9ft tall and looked like a giant bush.

Last year we must have pulled off over 300 figs from it.

Amazing for being in the North East.

To protect it from the NY winter I wrapped the tree with large cotton sheets and then a large tarp with holes punched through it so it could breath. I pruned it down to just under 8ft and built a 4x8 frame around it using 2x4 lumber. I cladded the outside of the frame with insulation board and filled the entire box with dried leaves. I covered the box with a plywood roof and placed a tarp over it for protection of rain and melting snow.

I was convinced that I had more than enough protection but when I uncovered it a couple of weeks ago it didn't look very well.

It had mold covering it and didn't show any signs of life.

Everyone that I know of that owns a fig tree say that they already have leaves and figs starting to grow.

My tree is barren.

I'm afraid that melting snow had seeped under the box and may have froze the trunk.

The trunk of the tree is about a 8 - 10 inches in diameter and it appears to have some cracks in it.

Sap is leaking out of the cracks.

I don't know what to do at this point.

I was thinking that I might try wrapping the trunk in hopes that the cracks heal maybe saving the life of the tree.

Maybe its too late.

Maybe the roots are still alive?

Is there any hope for my once beautiful tree?
