I am jealous of your oriole! I love them so much. I had several pairs nest every year at my old home but never had one since I moved. Did you have them before you put up the feeders? I've never put up feeders for them, they just showed up. Three years in a row they made nests on the same branch in a tree in my front yard. They found some string from a blue tarp, and they'd use it every year to build their nests, which made the nests very strong and they really stood out. One year we had winds in excess of 80 mph and I was worried sick about those poor little babies. After the storm I was outside with a flashlight, searching the ground for the babies. Darned if the next morning they were all in that tarp built nest, still alive. I was thrilled they survived the storm. The following year one oriole built a nest on a limb that was only five feet off the ground. We joked it had to have been one of those babies from the wind storm that was brain damaged. :) I sure miss those birds since we moved. They seemed like old friends. Thanks for sharing your picture.

Marian - That roadrunner would've been a great thing to get a video of. Happy ending but - I heard a thunk against my window this morning and went outside to find a male Baltimore Oriole sitting on the ground with his head tipped sideways and his beak hanging open. It took him 15 or 20 minutes to recover and he looked like he was getting worse for awhile instead of better. He kept closing his eyes. I couldn't resist letting him sit on my hand for awhile and I fed him some of the nectar from the Oriole feeder. They're so pretty. My kids have made home-made snowflakes and stuck them all over my bay window to keep the birds from flying into it since it's close to my bird feeders. I'm surprised he flew into it but he may have seen his reflection. Yesterday, he was landing on the ledge under the window and pecking against the glass. I wish I had another Oriole feeder. They seem to be territorial. It has four perches but I never seen more than one at a time at it. There were two male Orchard Orioles chattering at each other in the tree for a long time yesterday but neither of them would go to the feeder and the Baltimore Oriole won't go to it if there's already an Orchard Oriole there.

My yard has numerous mature trees, mostly an open woodland habitat, which is the attractive to Orioles. There is a large Pin Oak right above my deck and bird feeders. Baltimore Orioles have nested in this tree for 3 years in a row. This year I've been watching them more closely and reporting sightings to the Oriole Project with Mass Audubon. Right now, both parents are very busy feeding the babies, and I can hear them squeaking when they are getting fed! Their nest is located at the end of a branch at the bottom of the canopy about 30 feet above the ground. It is a different branch each year, but the nests have been close to each other and the shell of the previous year's nest hangs there for awhile. The nest is an amazing hanging pouch of woven fibers. I watched the female weave the nest this year! I don't feed Orioles, and have reduced the amount of food I put in the feeders because I didn't want to attract a lot of birds to the feeding station so as not to disturb the Orioles. They are very territorial about their nesting area. When the female was incubating eggs, Dad was aggressively chasing away all birds, from Crows and Grackles, to even the little Goldfinches! I can't imagine them tolerating other Orioles near the nest. I don't know how far they nest from feeders or other food sources, but I've observed them several time flitting through the branches and leaves of assorted trees (including Crabapples), probably picking at insects. Thank you all!...These a very illusive birds and hard to photographs
the normal way....hoping to get a female shot soon?
We been heaving rain almost daily and this doesn't help, the glass, from where the camera shoot's through....like window glass, gets water stained and needs to get cleaned after every shower.

Thanks Konrad This pic certainly brightens up ones day. The weather here has been all over the place---hot!!! rain windy often in the same day. the evenings have been cool thou----6-10c. I always though these birds were more orange in colour.

It could be.... perhaps a little off among some birds, here
a flash, compare to the orange, [fruit] and a darker front shot, the
chest seems a bit darker.

WOW!! Beautiful photo Konrad!

I'm new to the forum, and currently on vacation. I can see it's going to take a lot of discipline not to spend too much time at my computer, but I'm learning so much! And all the photos! :)

It seems that you have explained your technique before. (The bird took a photo of itself?) Can you direct me to the info., or give me a brief description? I love photography, but am a definite novice. I have a Cannon Powershot SX10.

I should correct myself, it's a Sony S600 Cybershot, the hack is the worst, best is to start on a cheap P32, or P43, I have ruined my first hack P32, buckshot does most of the hack video....below the 600hack. There are only about a handful of Sony's good for this hobby, there are some other brands but Sony's are preferred. Hunters use these allot for wildlife location, I always wanted to build something remote and stumbled onto this, I put them out simply to capture wildlife in my yard, it's a great hobby and very addicting!
I'll give some more links later.

This is the S600 inside of a 1060 Pelican case. The 3 mall batteries on top of he Bigfoot control board for power, the 2C batteries are for additional power for camera, so 5 wires get soldered inside the camera, 3 for running the board/camera, the other 2 wires for additional power.

This is how the outside looks.
Sony S600 on the left, the others are P32 and P43 inside a 1040 case.

These can be strapped on the tree.
